| A Biblical Self Image |
|
| |
The other day I was doing a chore I so often neglect – I cleaned my car. The typical things were done like sweeping the floor, washing the windows, and of course locate $6 worth of change that somehow made its way underneath the front seat (Maybe not quite $6). As I was washing the windows, I decided to wash the rear-view-mirror. I took some Windex out and proceeded to spray it on the mirror. As I did, I noticed my reflection in the mirror had changed. The view that I saw was not the view that reflected who I truly was and what I looked like. Likewise, too often we live our lives looking at ourselves not as God sees us, but as the enemy would like us to perceive ourselves. There is another mirror that we can look through called the Word of God that will not reflect a distorted image to us. Rather, it will reflect our true identity in Jesus Christ. Thus, we have to determine if we want a Biblical self-image or a distorted image that the enemy desires for us to assume.
Our self-image is the composite picture we have of ourselves. This is developed either by God’s Word or by our peers, our parents, and the media. It is up to us!
In his book Searching for Significance Robert McGee offers 4 lies that the enemy will try to muster in order for us to stay in bondage to a distorted self-image. (1) Performance trap - I must meet certain standards in order to feel good about myself. Romans 5:1-2 - 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have[a] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (
2) Approval Addict - I must be approved by certain others to feel good about myself. Colossians 1:21-23 - 21Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation(3) Blame game - Those who fail are unworthy to be loved and deserve to be punished. Isaiah 53:5 - But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
(4) Shame- I am what I am. I cannot change. I am hopeless. 2 Cor. 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. May we decide to look through the mirror of God’s Word and replace it with Satan’s lies! Furthermore, too develop a healthy self-image also requires that we except our own strengths and limitations and be satisfied with the looks, gifts, and talents that God has bestowed upon us. Elizabeth Elliot gives a marvelous illustration to illustrate my point. In her book Let Me Be a Woman, she records the story of Gladys Aylward unable to accept the looks God had given her. Ms. Aylward told how when she was a child she had two great sorrows. One, that while all her friends had beautiful golden hair, hers was black. The other, that while her friends were still growing, she had stopped. She was about four feet ten inches tall. But when at last she reached the country to which God had called her to be a missionary, she stood on the wharf in Shanghai and looked around at the people to whom He had called her. "Every single one of them" she said, "had black hair. And every one of them had stopped growing when I did." She was able to look to God and exclaim, "Lord God, You know what You're doing!" | Thank you again Pastor Tim. |

Very well - Just got back from Homecell had an awesome time in fellowship. Came to the conclusion that God wants His children to live a more real life in the world and in our daily walk. It doesn't make sense to be out of reach of non-believers.....LOL how will they ever get to know my Jesus if I can't have a normal everyday conversation with them.
All I can say is that God impresses me everyday with His will and wisdom. I tried to tell God a couple of months ago that I Love Him more......LOL He just said in a quite comforting voice..."No I Love you More my child :) "

| Good post, Pastor Tim! I love the E.E. quote! |
|
|
| Thanks so much pastor Tim, I often find that my self image is distorted by the performance trap. As with many of your Blogs I'll have to spend some time with those scriptures. |
|
|
| This is good, if we reallly want to know who we are, we should go to the word of God. Because the Bible says it's impossible for God to lie. So what he says, is the truth. |

Tim wrote, "There is another mirror that we can look through called the Word of God that will not reflect a distorted image to us. Rather, it will reflect our true identity in Jesus Christ."
So true! That's probably one of the most remarkable aspects of the Bible. How can a book of words, pulp and ink reflect my heart like no other book? This is the same experience A.S.A. Jones had when she converted from atheism to Christianity. In her words: This book was reading me as surely as I was reading it. Every time I found fault with its god, I ended up finding a fault of my own. What was I doing when I condemned this god for commanding Moses to kill? Was I arrogantly making my morality superior to that of the being who allegedly authored all of morality? Was I condemning the actions of an entire nation, which was trapped in a kill or be killed situation? What was it in me that wanted to express outrage at Jesus Christ for telling me that I had to give away everything to be considered worthy to follow him? Was it my own selfishness? Her site,www.ex-atheist.com appears to be down right now but the page is cached here.

Dave,
Thanks for the compliment. God's Word is powerful.
Spirit Led,
I agree! God's Word is powerful and should never be doubted.
Eric,
I love the quote. I appreciate your heart for apologetics. God will definitely use you to defend the faith! |

| This is a great post. I have struggled so much with my self image in the past, and am working on learning to see myself through the eyes of Jesus. |
|
|
Deb,
This is a struggle that many people have including myself. I will be praying for you |
|
|
| OK once upon a time I struggled with self image and not turning to Christ I tried Dope, Sex, Smoking to try to fit in and gain the world's aproval. Long story short Christ works better but it just takes patience to let him work his stuff. The Enemy always promises to make you feel better. He never says anything about jails institutions and death. I guess that would be bad marketing. And to think it all started with the lie that I wasn't good enough. I can't always recognize these lies by myself that's why I always strive for fellowship. Once again a great BLOG pastor Tim. |

| Pastor Tim, in this acceptance/rejection thing, do you think in many churches that certain people have "that look" and they say all the right things and do all the right things and are being promoted in church because of it? And then the pastor says it was what God did and really you know it was not? Is that just my imagination and I am behaving badly? I remember being in church one time a long time ago and someone was approached by the women in the church who told the lady she needed to take a bath before church or she can't come back. The woman was not as intelligent as most people and it hurt her so bad she could do nothing but cry about it. This woman who received the same Jesus Christ as everyone else in the church was considered not as good. I know this happens. What should a believer do when this happens? |

Pastor Tim This is me when I was growing as a teen I always was say timide got my feeling hurt all the time over the way other people saw me, I truly had a low self asteem. It took a long time to get delivered from that, Today I look back at that and say look how far I have grown by the grace and mercy of our God, because of what He said about me, I made in His Image, he know the number of hairs on my head, He said I'm wondeful marvalous made, He said he loves me, He never leave me or forsake me, Pastor Time today I really don't care what they say about me any more because were I weak Jesus is strong inside me God is for me who can be against me. I'm in very very good company because they did much worst to Jesus and he told us they would.. |

MaKelly,
You have a wonderful testimony to share. God has done a lot in your life. |

Too often we use the world to judge ourselves. We need to us God's word as our guide. Thanks for reminding us :)
