| It Only Takes a Spark |

The Zaca Fire has been burning west of Kern County since July 4. So far, more than 143,000 acres have burned. They aren't expecting the fire to be contained until some time in September; it is burning in an area that hasn't burned in over 100 years, so there's a lot of fuel lying around. Until then, there is an unhealthy air advisory. This photo was taken right outside my front door tonight at around 6:00pm. There have been 29 injuries, some from a helicopter that went down, but thank God no deaths. No major structures have been burned. Cost to fight this fire so far? Over $76 million. What started this? One spark from a power tool.
I have no spiritual truth to glean from this, except the obvious. On my quick trip to the coast earlier this week, we drove past some firefighter camps along the highway. These guys are living in tents, risking their lives to bring this crazy fire under control. Pray for them and their families. Pray for people living in this area with breathing problems. This smoke is starting to affect even those of us who are relatively healthy. Thanks. |

| Sooz, that is amazing. We lived in CA for a year, 'bout an hour east of LA. We were VERY close to the "Old/Grand Prix Fires" that merged and burned over 200 homes near San Bernardino back in 2003. That was one crazy day for us... |

I live in Ohio, so the threat of fires here is pretty much non existant. I have never experienced that sort of threat, and I can't imagine it. My heart goes out to all those who are fighting it. |

I missed this blog until now! Yesterday, something potentially scary happened. My boys came in and said they were playing a fire game. I found this very odd, not like the sports they are typically playing, so upon investigation, I found out that a little boy down the street had a lighter and matches! They said, "but it isn't really fire, just a little one." So, we had fire lesson 101 and I had to do the not fun task of bringing the stuff back to his mom. I explained that just one spark can create a blaze resulting in the smoke we here in Bakersfield have been breathing for weeks now!
We have had fire safety discussions at our house. In fact, my oldest MUST sleep with a battery operated light next to his pillow because he is afraid that if there is a fire, he will not be able to see to get out the window!! However, we do not have matches or lighters around. The only fire starter we have is the kind you use for lighting a candle or your fireplace. So this was a good lesson for me that we should have maybe shown them what matches and lighters are rather than just talked about them. |

| Ohmygosh, Kristine! Isn't it upsetting when we think we've been very clear about safety issues with our kids and then we find out we weren't as clear as we thought we were? Been there, done that. Thank God He doesn't miss a thing. At these moments, I have a picture in my minds eye of our Savior folding his arms and smiling, shaking his head at us. I appreciate it so much when He highlights the stuff we miss! What happened yesterday with your kids was definitely a GOD thing! Be glad it happened! |
