| Juan and the Redneck |
|
| |
Wow, what a weekend! It was such a blessin that I figured I’d share it with all ya’ll. There’s so much to tell that I guess I’ll have to split it up into 2 parts… here’s part one called "Juan and the Redneck." So Saturday I was in the yard, finally removing the “Wide Load” sign off the end of the house cause apparently there is some kind of rule about keeping up the appearance in the trailer park. I guess empty beer cans and Earnhardt flags are far more appealing yard décor’. Anyway, a few houses over I seen a new family movin in, so like a good neighbor, I decided to cook up some bologna/mustard sandwiches and hand deliver them. They was very gracious folks who had come in from Texas and was named the Gonzalez’s (Juan, Maria, and their son Chuck) After a brief conversation, they asked if my boy Chase would like to go ride quarter-horses with Chuck and I agreed. I reached in my pocket to get some change cause I thought they was talking about that little horse ride in front of the Dollar General, but I later found out that they was real horses and didn’t need change. I invited them to Homecoming service at my church and they gladly agreed. So, Sunday morning rolls around and at 8AM there’s a knock on my door. You guessed it, the Gonzalez family was up and ready, with homemade chili in hand. I decided to test out the chili for breakfast and it was gooooood. Well, we swung by KFC to pick up some chicken and headed to church. The service was going great and them somethin began to speak to me and it wasn’t the Lord. So I excused myself and didn’t get back until service was over and lunch was being served. Juan and Maria said that the message was wonderful and everybody was very polite to the newcomers. They especially loved the chili but I didn’t have the heart to warn them about its after-effects. Good thing we didn’t have church that night! (Part 2 will have more detail about the service!) Anyway, later that evening both families decided to go out get some ice-cream. While enjoying good food and conversation Juan warned me that there was a group of fellers poking fun at him and his family. Well, I got madder that a rabid yellow-jacket on a leash and give them boys the “what-for” if ya know what I mean. Quietly, Juan said that I should leave them alone, but I continued to give them a piece of my mind. I apologized to Juan on behalf of them boys and I made a remark about how folks should “Love your neighbors.” To my surprise, Juan said “yes, but Jesus said to love your enemies too, and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:43-44)
Ah, life’s little bible lessons. Even in the face of adversity, God’s word should be applied. It was easy for me to stand and confront them fellers cause they weren’t my enemy, they were confronting Juan. But Juan’s biblical actions were far more effective than my carnal words.
Hope ya’ll can get a little something out of this experience, I sure did!
Love to all, Rich |

man I'm glad you were able to reach out to that family... I tried to talk to them about the Lord today, but when I asked Juan if he knew Jesus he said something about "yeah he's my cousin" so I just left. |

| Great blog, and a great lesson! I do remember from Spanish class that in that culture, Jesus is a common name, so Juan probably really does have a cousin named Jesus. |

| If you liked their chili you really would like their candy. My daughters store(she married a Garcia) has candy that comes with hot sauce! Yum, Yum! Of course it's a really happy place. Whenever my daughters at the checkout counter she just talks away in Spanglish, all the real Spanish speaker just smile and giggle a bit to hear her try to speak Spanglish with a Hoosier accent! I just stand there and smile, she is my daughter you know. |

What a precious story... while reading I was laughing so loud, that I looked (even though I'm home alone) to see if I was disturbing anyone.
Can't wait for part two.
God Bless,
