Well, that was embarassing.  67% and I'll leave it at that.  Except for this:  Cubits??  C'mon!

Well, it looks like we all know the story pretty well. I will forgive the cubits thing. (Come on, don't you all measure in cubits? I know my mother does. She measures material that way - the length of a forearm.)  I think I will give this quiz to my class on Wednesday.

The infamous 2&4.  4 is actually the one I want to look up. I'm sure the quiz and everyone who get #4 right has to be wrong.  Of course my initial reaction was that he brought the whole Phillistine army with him, but they wouldn't let me guess that.  So I had to go with a corner man, a cut man and an agent.  :)

BTW, I'll disagree with you slightly.  I think the stone question was a bit of a trick question.  At least the majority of the people who got it wrong will have gotten it wrong because they guessed the other number mentioned with regards to the stones in that story.

BTW, the other reason I guessed as high as I did was because I thought I remembered hearing the reason David brought the extra stones was in case he had to fight Goliath's brothers.  Now having just reread the story, I see that there isn't even mention of Goliath's brothers in 1 Samuel 17.

Has anyone else heard this and know what/where to attribute the story to?

Norm, I agree with you that the stone question borders on a trick question...you have to read it carefully.

Goliath was actually a distant cousin of David...both descendents of Naomi.  Based on the historical records, Orpah (Ruth's sister - the one that stayed in Moab) had four sons. One of those sons had Goliath and at least one other son. This small family tended to be very large - similar, I assume to the time I rode on an airplane with the LA Lakers team.

The speculation of "the four extra rocks for Goliath's four brothers" is nothing more than speculation.  I suspect, IMHO, that five stones is what fit comfortably in David's hand. Like any of us who have been through training, you do what you have trained. He probably ALWAYS picked up five stones. If the stones were larger, they didn't fit in the sling. If they were smaller, they were not as lethal. Of course, I am speculating here, but I tend to think David was a fairly practical guy.

67, and I did think I knew the story, but you know I'm learning I need to fine tune my understanding!

You guys have all shown me how important it is just to review the story...which has helped me in prep for my class on Wednesday...it is hard to find something new in this story that every one knows.
