Jesus' Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12)Summing up the Old Testament7:12 All those things, then, which you would have men do to you, even so do you to them: because this is the law and the prophets.
At the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that he came to fulfill the law and the prophets. Towards the end of his sermon he reiterated this statement with a concluding remark summing up the law and the prophets, the Old Testament. The golden rule forms the most beneficial basis of any society. It is a standard that unifies ancient and modern believers. For the golden rule to function, it must come from the heart, loving our neighbor (Matthew 22). Throughout the Sermon on the Mount Jesus pointed out the real intent of the Old Testament. It involves humility, mourning wrong, gentleness, treating others with justice and mercy, being a peacemaker, pure-hearted, and willingness to be mistreated for doing the right thing. Loving our neighbor as ourselves involves doing good to them, without anger or lust, being kind to an enemy, not doing good just for show and judging others rightly. What's in it for you? Doing religious stuff is easy. Doing to others as we would have them do to us is the real test of our religion. |
