The other day I was driving down the road and was listening to one of my favorite radio programs, Breakpoint, hosted by Chuck Colson. It’s a show geared towards assisting its listeners in developing “a Christian perspective on today’s news and trends.” The subject dealt with that day was a review of a movie entitled The Ultimate Gift. The movie is about a young man named Jason who is due to inherit a trust from his recently deceased grandfather. However, in his grandfather’s will is a cleverly devised plan to teach Jason a valuable life lesson. The plan includes 12 gifts that are designed to teach him to decide what’s really important in life, money or happiness. A Trip to the Video Store After hearing Colson’s recommendation I stopped by the video store to rent the movie before heading home. When I got home it was going to be about 15 minutes until my wife would arrive so I had a few minutes to kill. I decided I would go online and find out what the critics had to say regarding the movie, knowing that they would not be as kind as Mr. Colson had been. What I found was nothing short of vitriol with a disdain for anything wholesome. For instance, Louis Carlozo from the Chicago Tribune said, “Be prepared to be hit over the head by the message.” Entertainment Weekly’s Gregory Kirschling offered a most telling comment regarding Hollywood’s animosity towards Biblical values and its infatuation with anything that would defame those values, when he deemed the movie to be nothing more than “a feel-good Saw for churchgoers.” Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to see the movie in order to compare Colson’s review with those of the critics.
Being Hit Over the Head As mean spirited as Kirschling’s comment was, what troubled me the most was Carlozo’s comment about being prepared to be “hit over the head with the message.” Not only was this an unfair comment, it clearly showed a bias that is reflective of Hollywood’s worldview. Why do the critics not accuse makers of “The Da Vinci Code” starring Tom Hanks of attempting to hit us over the head with their message and purpose: to undermine the Christian faith? How about other movies that portray a sexually promiscuous lifestyle as being perfectly normal? There is no charge of hitting us over the head with those messages. All of this begs the question, why the concerted effort to undermine Christian based films? The answer, I believe, is that Hollywood understands the power of the arts. Andrew Fletcher once said, “Let me write the songs of a nation - I do not care who writes its laws.” He understood that he could make an incredible impact on society’s thinking by using the arts as his mouthpiece. Hollywood understands this all too well. Coming at You at Three Levels Ravi Zacharias illuminates for us the idea that a philosophy comes to us in three levels. Level one is theory. This level deals with the foundation of one’s philosophy at the theoretical level. For instance, in the movie “The Ultimate Gift”, the writers and producers of the movie attempt to communicate a distinctly Christian worldview. However, in order to advance such a theory requires that it be communicated in understandable ways. This brings us to the second level which is the arts. According to Zacharias the second level “does not feel the constraint of reason or come under the binding strictures of argument. It finds its refuge in the imagination and feeling.” The arts then become the persuader that attempts to sway people to adopt the philosophy that is being communicated. It illustrates for the audience the philosophy being communicated. Consequently, it is imperative that we must rid ourselves of the idea that movies are simply for entertainment. They are often if not always made to convince viewers to a way of thinking or believing. To convince is exactly what level three is all about. The third level is practical application. People now apply the theory (level one) to daily life, resulting in the new found theory governing how they view the world. Learning from Archie Bunker
An example of how these three levels play out can be best illustrated by examining the 1970’s sitcom All in the Family. The show compared the conservative views of a blue collar family man named Archie Bunker with his college educated son-in-law, Mike. Archie, who was to represent conservative thinking, was portrayed as a bigoted, homophobic, uptight person who was uneducated and in need of enlightenment. Mike, the politically liberal son-in-law was portrayed as informed, educated, and as having views that are founded on intelligent, rational thinking. The producer of the film, Norman Lear, intentionally chose to attempt to influence beliefs in order to further an ideological agenda. He did this through these two characters for the purpose of trying to promote certain stereotypes of liberals and conservatives. Hollywood – The New Evangelists Indeed, Hollywood’s goal is to evangelize America. However, Hollywood has not only been successful in reaching the general population, it has been successful in propagating its message to the Church as well. According to the American Family association, “In 2005, roughly $8.8 billion was spent on movie tickets in the U.S. How much of $8.8 billion do you think came from those who call themselves Christians? According to The Barna Group, it was a massive $6.94 billion. Over 70% of the box office intake comes from people of faith.” Thus, it is important that we learn to be discerning and seek to “demolish (rather than embrace) arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God” (II Cor. 10:5a). |

The enemy is in control of Hollywood - it's so apparent in what is deemed "acceptable" and what gets ridiculed, just like you said. Great post! |

Yep, Hollywood definately has an agenda. Sort of related: an athiestic femenist friend once told me: "You shouldn't go around preaching at people." To my knowledge, I wasn't at the time. It was kind of funny that she was preaching to me to say I shouldn't preach at others =D |

Pastor Tim,
Once again.... BAM! You hit it on the head. Excellent article. Boy I wish I coudl write like you, awesome.
I've been teaching teaching how the music industry is deliberately undermining, deliberately brainwashing our children. As you also said, far too many Christians are being taken in as well.
I would give the blog a 10, but they won't let me. Gotta run, gotta go look up "vitriol "

I agree with you that there are some in Hollywood (and in every business) that want to evangelize people to their way of thinking. Hollywood tends to be more visible because we all watch movies, TV, or listen to music and watch musicals and plays from time to time.
I also believe that there are people in Hollywood (and in every business) that really want to do what is best for that business. As Christians, we know that "best" is a business that glorifies God. There is indeed some entertainment, not much, but some, that does that.
What surprises me the most is that we, as Christians, do not support or promote those movies, tv programs, plays, that glorify God as much as we should. We might mention them, but we don't promote them. Usually, we talk about the bad ones and "go to see it so we can be more familiar with it".
In Hollywood, as in all things, we need to be able to discern the good from the bad. There will be far fewer good than bad, so we need to be careful. When something good "comes out of Samaria", we should rejoice, promote it, and beg for more. Most the time we choose not to because, well, it is inconvenient or just isn't worth it...and we sit on the side of the hill as Goliath defies the Lord repeatedly.
I am all for cutting them off - I haven't ever had tv in our home. I am all for not supporting those who defy the Lord - such as the recent actress who claimed the award was her god.
I agree with Pastor Tim here. Be discerning, then take action. In many ways, our life and the lives of those we care about depend upon it. |

God's chosen,
Growing in Faith, I agree. the enemy is in control.
Jess, As you were sharing about your friend, I was reminded of a situation when I once debated my professor in class. He stated that Christians were narrow minded because they believe in absolute truth. As asked him if he believed in absolute truth. He responded to my question by telling me that there was no such thing as absolute truth. I asked him if he knew that to be absolutely true. That pretty much ended the debate. Unfortunately he never thought in position through.
Pastor Amianata, thank you for the kind words. i totally agree with what you said regarding the music industry. Andrew Fletcher's statement is definitely relevant for today.
Voice, I agree with what you said regarding there being salt and light in Hollywood. The movie, The Ultimate Gift was a movie written by a Christian.
MaKelly, thanks for your comment. I agree. It is important to look at the message the movie is trying to communicate. |

It is true I am not a woman of few words. Words come very easily for me and my fingers type fast enough to keep up most of the time. Pastor Tim you have a way of targeting the important topics that will disciple our minds to awaken from slumber. Thanks for the time commitment you must give to bring us good topics for discussion. Truth is, I live about 10 minutes from Hollywood. Not the one in California, but the Unincorporated one if Georgia. We were so proud to see Hollywood get their first flashing light a few years back! LOL It helps manage all the traffic there at the Diner and Coon Dog Auto Parts. Now I know sum of yuns will laugh and poke fun at my geographical locale but that’s just because you haven’t been as blessed as sum of us. Enuff said. Seriously, this is a subject I have a lot to say on (as opposed to the other extremely short responses I have left in times past, LOL). As a member of the media for almost 2 decades (from age 19) I have walked behind many a mic and television camera. I have been the one to blow the lid off a good story - finding dirt when nobody else could. I have seen the bad and the ugly and decided I was tired of reporting the bad stuff. So, I decided to do the opposite and report something wholesome.
Some may claim my cooking show is highly unspiritual because there are not scriptures oozing out of the ketchup bottles, but I emphatically disagree. What the world needs is God and I have Him inside of me. So by providing a quality show from a Christian's worldview then I feel I am evangelizing by lifestyle. The Bible says they will know we are Christians by our love. Now occasionally the opportunity presents itself for me to bring a witness of Christ directly into the show, but more times than not it is just a kind word or promoting a worthwhile cause or just showing the love of Christ to our viewers through a good laugh or tasty recipe. Have you ever heard "Those who can't, teach?" This statement is pretty dogmatic because I know many teachers who definitely can do all that and a bag of jelly beans, but it does bring this to mind. If we're going to complain and not offer an alternative - we are just skeptical signposts without a message of direction or instruction. Imagine seeing a yellow diamond shaped road sign with no symbol. We recognize the shape and color and know it screams, “caution, caution, caution” but the driver would have no way of knowing what to watch out for if the sign is blank. When we complain without offering a solution we scream, “something’s wrong, something’s really wrong” and the world says…”well what’s so right about you?” “Can you do any better?”
Perhaps you do not have the skills to make a movie or produce a television show, but there are many qualified people (like me) who would greatly appreciate a second set of hands around the set but don't have a hefty budget like the big wheels in Hollywood. Perhaps ministry is more than just handing out tracks and singing in the choir. Maybe, just maybe, it could be offering to wash the dishes on the set of a cooking show.....or volunteering to be an extra or gopher in the next TBN film. Media has been a major influencer in the last century and I see no signs of that changing save the return of Christ. Perhaps we should dig our heels in and say we will work together and bring an alternative to the trash and filth that is flung at us, all in the name of entertainment. We are being entertained all right – but what are we entertaining in exchange? I feel like when we submit our eyes and ears to the evils imagined in the minds of many Hollywood producers we reverse the effects of Isaiah 61. In essence we give away beauty and receive ashes, we give up praise and receive despair, and so forth and so on. Not a good decision at all. |

| Kathy, thank you for your kind words. I agree that the media is a powerful way to share the Gospel. We definitely need more programs that are edifying. It sounds like God is using you to bring a quality program that stimulates culinary creativity as opposed to the baser instincts that Hollywood tries to appeals to. |

| First thang I thought about when I read those $$ figures was movie pirating. I wonder if the christians spent more money on movie tickets because they were unwilling to download em off the internets? My neighbor don't never pay for movies no more cause he downloads em for free... which is stealing. Just a thought. Really good blog, Pastor Tim. Makes ya think. |

Dennis, thanks! Great minds think alike:-)
Mullet, I never thought about pirating being a reason for the figures being as they are. Excellent observation. |

Do you think that Christians have been so subtly influenced by the secular messages of Hollywood that we accept anything that comes down the pike as being Gospel truth? I don't want to mention names, but there are 4 popular celebrities today who are very secular and yet all give testimony to growing up in Christian homes and two were in Charismatic believing homes. One young lady testified on E Entertainment about how she was told by the Lord Himself that she should sing this music, and she testified that she received the revelation while worshipping during a Youth Meeting at Church camp. Another young lady shows a video of her singing solo during a youth rally at her church. Two more made movies that include the spiritual teaching in their homes. Now there is something not right when you have children who are able to walk away from the way so easily and with the endorsements of their pastors and youth leaders. Recently at my job (I am a cab driver) I was sitting outside a well known bar in our town waiting for the fare to get into the cab. I was listening to a popular praise and worship channel on the radio and yet the beat and the sound of the music was exactly the same sound coming from inside the bar. We have been taught a false teaching calling it grace and it no more exemplifies the nature and character of Jesus Christ. Grace is a good teaching and is Bible based, but the prodigal did not get grace while he was STILL IN the pig pen. He had to eat the dirty junk the pigs were eating. The Father did not go down and drag him out of it and neither did he commend the young man while he was living riotously. He got the grace when he CAME OUT of the pig pen and went back home to the father. And that is where Christianity is at today, in the pig pen eating dirty junk and saying it will not harm us because we have grace. We have no grace if we choose to walk out from under it. If people want to quote the Paul, then they need to quote all of Paul including the parts that say "Be separate." "What fellowship has light with darkness" and "Be not unequally yoked with unbelievers". So this is it from one frustrated Christian. I wish people would see their allowance of their children to walk and talk and act like the world is merely teaching them to lay with pigs. Sorry to be so harsh and blunt, but this generation needs to see a SAVING Jesus, not just a friendly guy who loves everyone and wants to get along with everybody. If Jesus were accepting of people like that, why did HE call HIS OWN disciple the Devil? Because Jesus came to SAVE, not to accept. |

| Awesome post Pastor Tim. I as a mother of 6 pray that the secular world would stop dominating the christian based movies. Our home doesn't have cable or satellite television anymore because for the cost of it we didn't even watch 95% of it. We aren't hiding our children from the world. Believe me they see and hear enough, especially in public school. Our children actually understand and enjoy the restrictions that are placed about television and movies. Even your few channels that antennae's or rabbit ears pick up aren't great. I am not good with the right words to express what i'm thinking or feeling so please forgive me and bare with me. I just sooo... agree with your blog and am astounded at the amount of money christians pay in regards to the secular movie industry, but not surprised. I praise God that the daycare I work in through our church allows no secular movies whatsoever. Most of the children enrolled in our daycare only get the Word of God from us while they are there. I pray that that seed will be sown into fertile ground and bring a mighty harvest for Our Lord (in his time of course). Today's movie industry and television industry just sickens me. We teach our children the true word of God, not some sugar coated stuff. Our youth and our nation need to know that it is not okay to just act like a christian on Sundays in church. God does not reward those who live for him part of the time. Our God is a full time God and we need to be full time followers. |
