| A Bear in the Woods |

I came running into the house. I had been out walking with Bay after dark. The woods are very DARK after dark. Bay had been spooked about something and after giving it a growl, he came over and stood behind my legs. Then I heard it move and it was big. It was a good 50 yards back to our yard. Not sure what we were running from, but we were running.
The next day, the boys came in to the house excited. They had been playing in the creek and the beaver ponds. They had seen something very big. They were convinced it was a bear. They were convinced that maybe it was hurt or needed help in some way.
All five of us sat around the dining room table discussing our experiences with the bear. We discussed what we should do, if anything. I suppose we should have called some natural resource authorities, but we didn't. We decided to all go out looking for this bear. None of us had actually seen it...maybe we had...we weren't sure.
We walked out the back of our yard and spread out along the wooded hillside. The creek in the middle of us, and each of us far enough apart to cover a different section, but each of us could see each other.
As we walked through the woods, the terrain began to become more rocky than what I had remembered. No problem. We kept pushing along. Then I heard it. One of the kids called out that they had found the bear. Come quickly!
We all ran to where the creature was hiding. It was behind a rocky overhang. It was, sure enough, a bear. We looked at each other. We weren't sure what to do. I crept closer. I could tell that the bear knew I was there, but he wasn't angry or scared. I got close enough to touch him.
As I reached out to touch him, he rolled over on his back and put his paws up in the air. The thought that went through my mind is that this is what Bay does when he wants us to rub his tummy. So, I reached down slowly to rub the bear's tummy.
That is when I woke up. I have no idea what happened next. It was one of the most vivid dreams I have had in a long time. |
