| The Value of MyChurch - One Pastor's Perspective |
|
| |
A few months ago a friend of mine invited me to the MyChurch website. He knew my interest in writing and recommended that I stop by and give it a look. I’m glad I did. I am so delighted to find a community of believers striving to make connections with a purpose. I found that it is an opportunity to express my faith by sharing what God is showing me in my own spiritual pilgrimage. In this blog I would like to share 5 reasons why I value MyChurch. First, it is a way to broaden my borders of ministry. With the advent of the Internet, the ability to minister to more people has been like never before. It used to be that a person’s sphere of influence was limited to one’s family, friends, neighborhood, and church. However, the borders of ministry are now being broadened. Isn’t this what Jabez prayed, that his borders of influence would be expanded? It was his prayer that God would bless him and enlarge his territory (I Cor. 4:9-10). Consequently, the ability to make a global impact, which is at the heart of the Great Commission, is made possible, at least in part, through the ministry of MyChurch. Second, it is an avenue to do writing. Writing is a great way to edify one another. The Greek word for edify, oikodomeo means “to build up as a house, construct, as living stones, encourage spiritual progress by word and example, thus to build up spiritually.” This opportunity is afforded to us by blogs, encouraging e-mails, e-casts, etc. in order to build up one another. This is precisely what Paul recommended when he said that Christian should “make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification” (Rom. 14:19). You never know, if the writer of Hebrews was alive today, he may have even said that Christians might want to encourage one another by blogging, while it is still called today (Heb. 3:13). Third, I found it a great way to sharpen my skills in counseling and engage in apologetics. As a pastor, people often come to me for answers to their questions in order to find solutions to problems. We are expected to be the ecclesiastical version of Radio Shack, “You’ve got questions; we have answers.” (Just kidding! J). The Bible does, however, call pastors to be the shepherds of the flock, and part of that duty is to disciple, equip, and train the laity. I have found that responding to posts has sharpened my ability to answer the questions that come my way as a pastor.
Fourth, it gives a more global perspective on the body of Christ. – Most Christians view Christianity from their own private enclaves. However, there are different churches with different cultures, maintaining different cultural expressions. Each of these churches are experiencing different challenges, but strive to maintain a Christian witness within their own cultural milieu while at the same time, being faithful to the Word. By exposing ourselves to different cultures and denominations, we better realize what God is doing, not just in our own backyard, but the world as well. Last, it benefits my church. It has opened doors for people in my fellowship to express what God is doing in their lives. It has also assisted us in sharing to others what God is doing in our church. |

| I'm glad you wrote this Pastor Tim, I was ponderin this today too. The one that I've been most affected by is the fourth one. It's amazin to see all the different beliefs. I think that in the comin months this will be the biggest challenge for folks out here: To respect everybody else even when they might believe somethin totally different than what we believe, and to have civilized "debates" or discussions about those things. Its been fun watchin this site grow. |
|
|
| Pastor Tim, you have said a mouth full, this is all true in what you are saying. Me i love to write, wittness, and counsel, and even if i dont spell well, im learning to pick up a dictionary, even if i dont write well, my words are getting sharper, and the counseling part is great while i am giving to others i am gaining so much more. thank you for this blog. |

| I enjoy it for all the reasons you stated. I also like the "faith challenges" - those statements that cause me to rethink my believe. Bible study, prayer, and further discussion are often a part of that. The result is either a deeper understanding of what I already believe or a change in understanding that moves me closer to the Truth. |

Mullet, as I was reading your response I couldn't help but reminded of Psalm 133:1 which says, "How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!"
Keith, God will use you mightily brother! |

Great thoughts here. I agree with your assessement about My Church. May I also add... It grows us in patience and in love and It builds biblical apologetic skills that we are able to contend effectively for the Faith whenever the need arises.
Thanks for sharing --JR |

This must be a day of reflection.
Pastor Tim as you know, I just got here, I'm pulling up on a month. I agree with all of your points, except #2 "avenue of writing", because I hate to write. But I do see MyChurch as a "blessed opportunity."
Unlike a lot a people, I embrace diversity of perspective, I yearn for it. Our God is so vast that no one individual can comprehend all of him, yet if we are willing, and if we allow the love of Christ that we claim to abide within us, I believe that each of us would grow by leaps and bounds, each of us would broaden not only our boundaries, we would be able to see yet another aspect of our Almighty through the eyes, the lives and the experiences of another.
Many think that they are hidden just because their behind a computer screen, not realizing that picture or not, they are not hidden. Words are symbols that generate images in our minds. I see you all, and you all see me (literally duh on the telecast...lol).
So thank you Pastor Tim, for yet another great blog. As for me, MyChurch has afforded me a "blessed opportunity" to grow into an authentic child of God.

Gene, Very well said. It is a great way to either affirm what we believe or cause us to re-examine what we believe.
Jr. It really causes me to grow in patience when my computer is acting up like it is now. lol God is doing great things with this site!
Pastor Aminata. I think that you sell yourself short. I think that you write well.
Cathy, It was a bad weekend. Redskins and Bears lost. With there Bears playing like they are, I am glad that the Cubs are probably going to the playoffs. Otherwise it will be a long autumn. |

| Pastor Tim, I strongly believe that Jesus Christ came to this world to be inclusive and not exclusive. Your fourth point just tells that. Amen. I like your thoughts for the same reason that you have stated here. Thanks for your words. May the Good Lord Bless you and your ministry. |

You are so right Pastor Tim This is a way we can all broaden our witnessing as well as make new friends in Christ. We can help each other through difficult times (as I have learned first hand, thank you all for your kindness), and we can learn from each other as well. |
|
|
| Right, make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edification...I stress "peace." Bless you, brother. I like your godly perspective, and your obvious love for ALL of God's people, regardless of denominational labels...cause that's just what they are; labels! |

Pastor Tim, you have summed up MyChurch well, but one other point I would add, to encourage each other through prayer and join together to lift one anothers burdens to Him who has to power to change our lives!
Thanks for helping us clearify our beliefs and understanding of Gods grace to each of us with your blogs here. I truly enjoy reading your writing and find encouragment in much of what you write. peace |

Pastor Tim, I'd agree w/all five points! MyChurch has great value! I deeply appreciate #4, this was a profound eye opener for me. It's absolutely true that when we learn about God in isolation, our vision is easily clouded by our personal perspective. It has been a tremendous benefit to me to read blog after blog of fresh perspective, even those I disagree with, in order to gain a broader understanding of Christendom. I might also add, I myself have been corrected a time or two! (or maybe more, haha)
I also wonder about the danger of large Christian internet forums such as MyChurch. Not talking about stalkers and that sort of thing. But what about the dangers posed by people who authoritatively post "truths" that aren't really true, or are only partially true (and therefore partially false)? While those who study the Bible are probably not in any danger from such posters, the young and new Christians certainly could be. I don't have a solution, just curious about your thoughts.

| Mike, I know you addressed this to Pastor Tim, if I may share my thinking on the matter. You said, "I also wonder about the danger of large Christian internet forums…" this is a concern, as it should be, but it's not just in these forums, it's in our churches today. The only thing anyone can do is pray, pray that wisdom and understanding prevails in spite of. I've heard and seen many weird things in churches in my lifetime, and trust me it's scary. As oppose to us struggling to understand the infinite wisdom of God, many would rather reduce God down to our own pitiful mindset and deduce (reach conclusion- to come to a conclusion, often without all the necessary or relevant information, but using what is known in a logical way) him from there. But what can one do? One thing I do know, that is prayer changes things. This is my thinking. Pastor Aminata |

Kathy, Ragland, Denise, Laura, and Glen, I am so glad I have brothers and sisters in the Lord like yourselves. God has brought us together to learn from one another. Mike, I too am troubled from time to time about what I read. However, I think that any medium that is employed to reach people with the Gospel is going to countered by the enemy. I was saved by watching Christian TV (700 Club), but I see so many programs on the Christian television station that trouble me. But, with that medium there are no counter positions given – no one to point out the inaccuracies. Conversely, in this type of forum there is an opportunity to counter teaching that is contrary to Scripture. People like you and I and others who hold orthodox beliefs can give an answer for the hope that lies within us. I have read enough of your blogs to know that you divide the Word of God rightly and are being used to greatly.
Apologetics is not just for the world, it is also for the Church. For example, Paul used the written Word (his epistles) to counter false teaching and so can we. I am not a proponent of the relativistic thinking that sometimes under girds our quest for Christian unity for some, which allows false teaching to flourish.
I think that we should not major on the minors but we should major on the majors. The question is whether the point being made is central to the Christian faith (inerrancy of Scripture, Virgin Birth, Deity of Christ, etc) or is a non essential issue like the spiritual gifts, mode of baptism, etc. Maybe you or I could write a blog on how to discern what is true and what is false.

Pastor Tim:
My Church is another way for Gods Glory to be manifest... it is a way for the Complete Body of Christ to Function at a Fuller Potential... We as Members of the Body , have our own Gifts from the Holy Spirit , The Gifts mentioned In HIS WORD... I won't mention them all here , It suffices that we ALL can Grow , and Learn , and Be Encouraged , Strengthened , Fed and Feed Others.. according to Out Diverse Gifts.. The Body has to Come together to work Effeciently together... This is a Place to do that , with out all the worldly Influences to distract and Draw away... There is NOT ONE of us who Knows It all Or Is Perfect in all ways... we all have our strengths and weaknesses... MyChurch Is where we can come to Be balenced and Complete... This is Just a small Part of what MyChurch means to us all... But it is a Idea and sample of it... |

| Excellent thoughts Pastor Tim. I agree! This has especially been a blessing for me to have an outlet on which to write. It has been a real blessing. |

Mike, great minds think alike!
MaKelly, thank you for encouraging me as well.
Dave, God is using this site in amazing ways.
Rev. Floyd, I agree with what you said about working together. The body of Christ is a team.
Deb, I always injoy your writing. I am glad that you have found an outlet that God is using for his glory. |
|
|
| Exactly why we all keep coming back sharing and carring for each other in even this form of fellowship is a great blessing. |
|
|
Although I have only been a member of MyChurch for about a couple of months, I enjoy reading the current blogs and also I have been known to read some from the past, especially if the title catches my interest. One of the things that drew me to MyChurch was the large diversity of people here with totally different beliefs, different backgrounds, but all sharing one common factor.....Praising and Glorifying God In The Highest.
Excellent blog Pastor Tim....you get a star from me!!

| It's a wonderful blessing to us too when our readers leave us notes letting us know what they thought. You're getting quite a few of them Pastor Tim, glad to see it! |
|
|
| Amen brother! I was first introduced to mychurch in March of this year. Since then, I've introduced several churches and many, many friends to mychurch. It's been a blessing and an encouragement to me as well as others around me. In a world where there's so much negative, profanity... it's a breathe of fresh air to be able to chat and talk with others in a safe "enviroment". |
|
|
| Thanks Mike & KdtW for your comments. It's always nice to dailogue with friends. God bless you guys! |

Pastor Tim,
MyChurch has really opened many doors for my ministry too. Sitting in India, I can minister to the precious people of God all over the world. The greatest miracle performed by God for us is the fellowship of the members of the Body of Christ, the universal Church, through internet. I was a novice to the internet and email just some years ago. Then the Lord taught me step by step how I should build my ministry through internet. Apart from creating many websites on my own, He really helped me in joining the email ministry in InJesus.com, through which I am sending devotionals to about 3500 people all over the world.
You can also become a member of my email list
Now the Holy Spirit led me to this wonderful ministry where I can have fellowship with many ministers of God like you.
Pastor Tim, you are truly a man of God with humility. The Lord will use you mightily in the days to come in a manner never imagined by you.
