| Halloween, (Innocent fun or not????) by Wayne Black |

Many Christian parents do not allow their children to participate in Halloween activities. Is such a prohibition Biblically sound? Oh yes, indeed it is. Halloween has its origin and basis in evil paganism, which God condemns (see Witches And Sorcerers). Halloween may perhaps best be described by its associated name, Devil's Night.
The respected and authoritative Encyclopedia Britannica has a startling account about what's behind Halloween:"Halloween, in medieval times All Hallows Eve, a holy or hallowed evening observed on October 31, the eve of All Saints Day; in modern times, it is the occasion for pranks and for children requesting treats or threatening tricks."
"In ancient Britain and Ireland, the Celtic festival of Samhain was observed on October 31, the end of summer. The date was also the eve of the new year in both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon times and was the occasion for one of the ancient fire festivals when huge bonfires were set on hilltops to frighten away evil spirits. The date was connected with the return of herds from pasture, and laws and land tenures were renewed. The souls of the dead [see What Happens When You Die? and Where Is Your Soul?] were supposed to revisit their homes on this day, and the autumnal festival acquired sinister significance, with ghosts, witches, hobgoblins, black cats, fairies, and demons of all kinds said to be roaming about. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature. In addition, Halloween was thought to be the most favorable time for divinations concerning marriage, luck, health and death. It was the only day on which the help of the devil was invoked for such purposes." (Encyclopedia Britannica, 15th Edition, volume 4, page 862)
And what does God's Word say about participating in activities based on paganism, witchcraft, demons, divination, and "seeking the help of the devil"? From the pages of The Bible: "the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of The Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both The Lord's table and the table of demons." (1 Corinthians 10:20-21 NIV)
"Let no one be found among you who... practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to The Lord." (Deuteronomy 18:10-13 NIV)

| I am going to write a blog myself about Halloween, but wanted to make a comment on yours. I remember when I was a kid that Halloween was fun. We would dress up in silly costumes and canvas the neighborhood for candy. It wasn't until I got a little older that they started to x-ray the candy because someone found a needle in an apple...then it didn't seem like so much fun anymore. When I went off to college, I only stayed at this particular college for one quarter, but it was during Halloween, and the whole campus went nuts. People drinking, filling the streets, it was a horrible experience. It showed me that it is only an excuse to act like an idiot for some people. Since I have become a Christian, I feel that it is more like commemorating the evil that is in the world, and I don't care to celebrate it in any way. Good blog. |

12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. It concerns me how children are exposed to things such as Halloween and the other lies children are told--so they can have fun--why not have fun based on TRUTH. So much hurt is based on deception, even if it seems innocent at the time. Thanks for comment |
