| Think READABILITY! |

After spending a while just looking at the sites of lots of fellow mychurch members, this is the word I'd like to share. READABILITY!! There are lots of wonderful and interesting people out there - I'm looking forward to meeting you all, if not now, then later (with the Lord!!) However, it was SO hard to read some of the sites. As an artist and sometimes-graphic-designer I love great graphics and funky text as much as the next person but one thing I've learned is that readability rules. One can have the deepest thoughts, the funniest outlook, the most holy perspective straight from the heart of God - but if it's too hard to read because of all the graphic backgrounds on the page it's just a waste of time posting. People aren't going to work too awfully hard to read it - too many other great writers online to spend too much time on struggling through one site. So when designing a site keep it simple and clean, easy to read, or put the text in boxes to stand out from the background. (Although that doesn't solve the problems in the titles and sidebars...) If you want a background choose one that is very light with low contrast (no very dark areas). Keep your photos smallish. And, most importantly, look at your site with the eyes of a visitor. Distance yourself emotionally from your favorite doodads and graphics and honestly consider whether others can actually read those great blogs you're writing. After all, the whole point of doing this is to be able to share with one another!! Happy blogging! |
