Yes, that's a good analogy. Feed the white dog well! :)

Dude, you're on the right track!  Our spiritual journey down here has times of great joy and happiness, but there is also a lot of mortifying that has to go on, and that usually isn't too pleasant!  By feeding the white dog you are killing off (mortifying!) the black dog.  The black dog may kick for a little while, but eventually he becomes weaker and weaker for lack of food and he dies.  Yes!  This is how it's meant to be!  In the natural it seems unnatural to try and kill off part of ourselves.  But we are meant to be supernatural, ie. spiritual, beings, not fleshly ones.  Keep after it, Dave!  God will show you the individual paths He wants you to take to accomplish this.  It's that wonderful combination of His leading and His power and our obedience.  :-)

Mr. Hope

Your are right you cannot walk in the spirit and feed the flesh at the same time.
It's like saying I want to go to church on Sunday but Monday through Saturday I going to go back to the my old ways. Let me tell you Hope that's trying to live with one feet in kingdom of God and the other feet in the world and that's like riding on the fence and do you know who owns the fence you guess it the devil, so it best to kill that old man and every time he raises his ugly head you tell him you are going to hanging out with Jesus

Amen Dave. Actually, this topic has been coming up a lot lately, so press in and press on. Watch what God will do.

yeah, like Petra's song, "Jekyll and Hyde", eh?  You aren't alone in your struggle against the flesh or the legalism.  You are absolutely not alone.  I am right there with ya, bro!  Just gotta keep pressing in, and doing all we know to do, leave it in God's hands.

I heard an illustration one time that likened flesh and the spirit to two dogs. You have to feed the one and starve the other.
