| Are You Ready to Score a Touchdown? |
|
| |
In honor of football season, I thought I would write a blog utilizing a football analogy. Granted, my love for football has waned since the Bears started off the season 2-4. As a matter of fact, if they continue to play like they did today, and make me endure another heartbreaking loss, I may have to spend the time I used to watch football and take up some other hobby, like the manly pastime of crocheting. A Touchback When there is either and kick off or a punt, and that kick or punt lands in the end zone and is not subsequently returned, the referee signals for a touchback. When this happens, the receiving team gets the ball on the 20 yard line. Thus my football analogy regarding the Christian life will begin there. Indeed, everybody begins life at the same place, the inevitable 20 yard line we call birth. From there it is the 80 yards one has to travel to get to the end zone. The 80 yards represent life, while the end zone represents death. The goal is to travel and get to the end zone successfully. Granted, some do it quicker than others. Nonetheless, the goal is still the same, which is to successfully to the aforementioned destination. First Downs and Penalties As you progress towards the end zone, there will be some first downs as well as some penalties (setbacks). This is just part of life. There are first downs that you can celebrate like getting married, the birth of a child, or when your child goes off to college and you finally get your house back. Or perhaps the first down is the day your daughter walks down the aisle to marry that guy that you have been praying against the last three years. It is at this time you realize that God doesn’t answer every prayer. lol As you and I ponder this point we begin to realize that there are many first downs in life. There are the wonderful relationships with family and friends that we all value, and the fun times that we share with them. These are the first downs that God bestows upon us that bring our life meaning and joy. With the many first downs that we experience, there are also penalties along the road to the end zone. Continuing with my football analogy, penalties represent the setbacks we have in our lives. Indeed, there are many setbacks we all face. We may have lost our parents, a job, or that incredibly painful experience of losing a spouse or child. Maybe the setback that you have faced is that things didn’t turn out they way you hoped. The American dream somehow passed you by. You don’t have that nice house you thought you would have at this time in your life. Or perhaps the job that you are currently working is much more a drudgery than a delight. To be sure, all of us experience both first downs and penalties in this game called life. It is what we do with them that counts. We Need a Playbook However, in order to get first downs and overcome penalties requires that we have a playbook. A playbook is issued to each member of the team and it includes terms, strategies, and plays used by that specific team. God also has a playbook. This is what we call the Bible. He has diagrammed how we are to score a touchdown. This is precisely why David said that God’s Word “is a lamp to [our] feet and a light for [our] path.” The Bible shows how we can be successful in this game we call life. Red Zone The last step before the end zone is what football aficionados call the red zone. The red zone is the last twenty yards of the 80 yard journey before the final destination. It is during this stretch where important decisions are made, decisions that will affect whether we score a touchdown or not. The red zone represents the choices that we have to make. “The words of Eleanor Roosevelt ring true: One's philosophy is not best expressed in words. It is expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our responsibility.” What’s more, the foundation upon which our lives are built is based on the daily decisions that we make. The writer of Hebrews wonderfully illustrates the point that I am trying to make. I Cor. 3:12-14 - Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. Furthermore, the choices we make will determine whether we hear from our Lord, “Well done good and faithful servant”, or we inherit what Hebrews speaks of regarding our works being burned up, yet remaining saved. Thus, we go to heaven, but forfeit any reward. Touchdown or Field Goal What determines our reward (touchdown) are the daily decisions that we make. Those who continually yield themselves to Jesus and His work will be richly rewarded. Then there are those who are saved, yet are not yielding themselves completely to Jesus, and are determined to remain aloof to the cause of Christ. They, instead, settle for a field goal. Sure, they score (salvation, since they have received Christ) but fall short of what God desires for them to do. We all resolve to abide in Christ, and be about our Father’s business. |

If I may - there is a penalty for the blogosphere that doesn't apply to the spiritual "game" - encroachment on the neutral zone. Haven't had that call in a while, thank goodness.
Cheer up, PT. The Colts are doing well! |

OK I like the post but I'm still thinkin' baseball "Go Tribe" although a Indians Cubs Series would have been nice. But I like the post.

| A blog about football written by a pastor.... I have died and gone to heaven! |
|
|
Pastor Tim, as always you have hit a home-run, oh! yuur talking about Football! LOL. Great analogy |
|
|
| Thanks guys. It was Sunday so I couldn't resist the footbal analogy! |
|
|
Wonderful analogy Pastor Tim. I use to follow football but no longer have the time but I like the way you tied in the rules of the game to the word of God. My walk for Christ must be as good as if not better than Jim Brown or Vince Lombardi. (you remember those guys) LOL Keep on Keepin on, Pastor Ken |
|
|
Thanks Pastor Ken. Who are Jim Brown and Vince Lombardi? Are they rookies? lol
|
|

Great post! Thank you for mentioning it to me. ~Coreena |

Pastor Tim
I don't know a thing about football, but when you line it up with the word, It works |
|
|
| By the way...when all is said and done and this battle on earth is over and we are in Glory with the King, I pray that we will play football. In which case Mike and Pastor Tim are on my team! |
|
|
Thanks consumed. You will be my first pick. I think I will wait until I get to heaven to play because that is when I will receive my glorified body. I will be 6-6 and 225 pounds and be able to run the 40 in 4.2 seconds.
Also, God told me that in heaven, the Bears win the Super Bowl every year. lol
When God told me that I got excited because I know that they are never going to win it again here on earth. lol |

Ah Pastor Tim - now football is the only sport that I like to watch... this blog triggered this thought; I see a stadium.... thousands of people, yellin, screaming.... cheering their favorite team, etc. This is much like our churches today.... thousands of people in the pews cheering their favorite Pastor.... but not in the game. Just like people who want to call the shots.... rewrite the playbook... but they ain't in the game..... just a bunch of wanna-bes, but ain't ever gonna-be....
God has give all of us the opportunity to get in the game. We don't have to be like the world of wishful thinking.... "if only I was in the game" we can actually get in the game... but that's not what many truly want.... too many just want to watch the game.... pretending like they in the game... but still calling the shots!

| Really great analogy! I have always found that Scripture in 1 Corinithians interesting, and sometimes a little confusing...you are a pastor---elaborate! Enlighten me! lol My husband tried with this one, but it just didn't click at the time in my brain or in my spirit. |

| I must say I am more into baseball now than football...since the Cleveland Browns are not doing so well, but the Indians are...but this is a great way to look at things. You make me think, and that is a good thing! |

| Thanks for taking the time to craft a wonderful word using a very agreeable topic for many. Blessings to you and yours, ~DR |

Thanks Pastor Tim Looking at it from that perspective really opens up our minds to follow HIS direction. |

Pastor Aminata, boy what you said is so true. There are some who are more familiar with what their favorite preacher has to say than they are what the Bible has to say.
Lara, I take the verse to mean what happens on judgment day for the Christian.
Deb, you are lucky. I am both a Cubs fan and a Bears fan. It looks like I will get a lot of readu done this fall on Sunday afternoons.
Dr. Thomas, Thank you for the kind words! Blessings to you!
Thanks Denise! I just looked on you profile and noticed that you attend Church of God. I was wondering if we are in the same denomination. |

Hi Pastor Tim, good to meet you. Interesting commentary on our life journey. I was thinking about there are team of 11 that are on the field, many more on the side line along with coaches that are on the sideline and up high looking at the big picture. I think that we need to remember that we are not lone-ranger Christians and we work as a unified body the best. Some have a better perspective than us and we need to listen to their advice filtered thorugh the grid of scripture. 15:22 Where there is no counsel, purposes are disappointed; But in the multitude of counsellors they are established. 5:15 Look therefore carefully how ye walk, not as unwise, but as wise; Thanks for the thoughts |
|
|
| We are definitely function as a team on the way to the endzone. Thanks for your thoughts. |

| God loves the Cowboys. I've written a blog on it. God told me that the Cowboys are his team... maybe that's why your Bears aren't faring so well? I loved your analogy though. Football season is hands-down the best time of year! |

Amen sister.
In heaven the Bears win the Super Bowl every year. lol |

I used to love to watch Singleterry. Those eyes and the way he was focussed. He was aware of his surroundings and focussed on one thing. Hmmm, might be a lesson there, eh? |
|
|
You just brought back one of my fondest memories - the 85 Bears. Possibly the best defense ever.
Singletery was one of my favorites too. Interestingly enough, he is a dedicated Christian. |

Yes, I have heard him share before. What really impressed me about him is he gave 110% each time out. He wasn't vocal about his faith while playing, but wasn't afraid to share the hope that he had in Christ when asked. What I am trying to say is he lived it first and then spoke about it. He preached the Gospel and when necessary, he used words. Way to go Singletery!! |

I love it!! Church and Football ... I must forward this on to my Pastor!! What a great analogy. Bravo, Pastor Tim! The last few posts brought back sweeeet memories for me as well. That '85 Bears Team was a delight to watch; had me up off the couch every game. My husband and I have had many conversations about Mike Singletary's eyes and how neither of us would want to be on the receiving end of that stare. I can't remember if he was the team Captain or not--if he lead the team in a prayer prior to going onto the field before each game? Does anyone know?
There have been many other Christian players who "walked the walk and talked the talk". For some reason Rosie Grier comes to mind. Also, didn't Lawrence Taylor eventually get his act straightened out and come to God? I may have to consult Google on this...
Thanks again for a wonderful, thought-provoking post. BTW, my poor hubby is struggling through another flip-flopping opening season with his beloved Dolphins. :-(
Peace and Blessings,
Deb

Deb, I believe Singleterry was the captian of the defense.
The people that you named are wonderful examples of players who reflect the character and nature of Christ. Other players and coaches in the NFL who are Christians that come to mind is Trent Dilfer, Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, and Rich Gannon.
Sweet Mary, another football fan. I love it! I am glad I was able to help with adding another play to the playbook. |
