| Fishin With Jesus |
|
| |
Me and my family love to fish at the beach. Every year in October we drive down there with our fishin poles, buy some shrimp, and fish all night off the pier. Its really a good time even if we don’t catch nothin cause we get to spend hours talkin and sippin on hot chocolate all night in the cool ocean air. This past weekend that’s exactly what we did. Me, my wife, my momma, and my deddy drove down to the beach Friday night. Got on the pier around 7pm and fished till after midnight. Unfortunately we didn’t catch much, but God taught me an important lesson that I want to share with y’all. See, when yer fishin at the beach you catch all kinds of fish. But there’s really only a few types that ya want to eat. Mullets and Spots are the best, but there's other species that you want to steer clear of like pinfish and blues. Pinfish got so many bones in em that you’d be takin yer life in your own hands if you tried to eat em, and blues just got a real unpleasant taste to em. Well, Friday night we wont catchin nothin but Blue’s. Now they was purty big and fun to reel in but it was sad when we finally got em and realized that we couldn’t throw it in the cooler. Every time me or my deddy would hook one, momma and Kathy would start clappin and cheerin. “Reel em boys! Get us enough for a fish fry!” and then they'd look all disappointed when they realized we’d have to throw it back. As we was repeatin this over and over, I started getting upset. I prayed, “Jesus, please let us catch something worth keeping.” But we just kept catchin them same old nasty tastin fish again and again. I was so mad I could pass gas and kick at it. He just won’t answerin my prayer. Then suddenly two things happened, almost simultaneously, that made me realize God had sometin more important he wanted to teach me. First, Momma tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, “Don’t look behind ya but there's a strange lookin man back there, he looks kinda dangerous” I turned around and saw the most scraggly lookin fella I’d ever seen. He was real skinny, wearin all camouflage, and looked like he hadn’t shaved in years. I whispered back to my family, “Ya’ll don’t make eye contact with him or he might come over here and kill us" Well, instead he just put his head down and walked away without sayin a word. Second, about that same time my deddy reeled in another Blue fish. Just before he threw him back an old man yelled from the other side of the pier, “Hey if you don’t want to keep that thang, give him to me cause they make good cut bait” My deddy handed the fish to the old man, and the old man proceeded to cut the fish up into little pieces and use it as bait. “Thanks, this is good for catchin king mackerel” he said. Immediately God spoke to my heart, “BillyRay, all of that just happened so I could teach you a lesson. You see you treated that scraggly man just like you've been treating those fish… like he was good for nothing. You waisted an opportunity to witness to him.”
Then He brought these verses to my mind. 2:11 For God does not show favortism. 3:9 God is longsuffering toward us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Boy did I feel bad. I said, "God please don't let that scraggly man die and go to hell." God said, "BillyRay, I'll take care of that one... but there's another reason you been catchin all these bait fish. Why don't you put my word into practice right now and tell that old man about Me"
Just then, I snagged another Blue fish! I reeled it in as fast as I could... grabbed it around the neck, and walked over to hand it to the old man. I said, "Excuse me sir, but I got some more bait for ya... oh and by the way do you know Jesus as your personal savior?...."
Long story short, the old man didn't accept Jesus that night, but I know I planted a seed. So I just wanted to share that experience with y'all. Don't treat folks like their worthless just cause they're different than you. God wants to save everybody, and if you see somebody that looks weird God probably put them in your life for purpose. Always be ready and willing to share your faith, unashamed, to ALL people.
Let the Lord speak to ya. God bless. BillyRay |

Did you try baiting with the blue guy to catch some king mackerel like the old man said? Sounds very pleasant....fishing' together as a family on a pier, evening-time with some hot chocolate....works for me..... You are right.....we tend to make value judgements.....this person is worth more than this other person.....I hope God is kind of like the thrift store and keeps the things others discard as useless, old, or "out-of-style".....honestly I/we get so deceived by outward appearances....granted outward appearance can speak volumes....but, God's thinking is different than ours..... |

Ain't this how we all act. It's like our Christian-manners just get thrown out the window.... cause after all... who's around to see, right? Well God sees, and God knows all. Mullet, BillyRae, look at how much God loves you. He's always correcting, ever so gently... ever so patient... there's a whole lotta lessons in this story.
Whenever there is an opportunity to share Jesus... share him, that's seed plantin.... one day there will be a harvest.
Good job!

| Pastor Aminata - Now you know you don't want to eat them thangs. They taste nasty. The only way they're edible is if ya clean as soon as you catch em, and fry em up while they're still fresh. |

Yes, at first I did. But then I got to wonderin why would Jesus be wearin camoflouge... cause he wouldn't be tryin to blend in. He would be wearin somethin where everybody could see him, like a red bandanna. So I don't think it was him. |

| "Don't treat folks like their worthless just cause they're different than you." I've been hearing that, too. I think it's cause I'm afraid of some folks, like in your story, and don't want to get out of my comfort zone. Thanks for a good teaching story. |

| Great lesson to us all in that story. Thanks for sharing. Yes, we do tend to put off things because we let our flesh rule, but when we are led by the spirit and follow in Christ's footsteps, we never know what will happen or who God may put in our path. You planted seed there that will come forth one day cause God's word never comes back void. We are fishers of men the word says. We need to learn to cease the moment when God gives them to us, amen? Keep the faith! Esther |

Jami - Thats good man Kristie - God bless you, and thanks Joe - That there is a very good point ya make. If we water down the gospel, we'll catch water'd down christians. We gotta present the Gospel as-is and let the holy spirit do the rest. Pastor Aminata - Another good point. See originally a lady had said that maybe the scraggly guy was Jesus in disquise, but then she deleted her question, and that was my response to her Ester - Amen, that's a good confidence we can always stand on when sharin Jesus with lost folks. |

Wonderful blog MP we do miss our chance to witness sometimes or at least I have. I am glad you seized the chance when you realized and before it was too late to do anything about it. My mother loves mullets they are her favorite and spots too. I hope they don't tear down anymore of the piers here, there is only one or two left I think, don't know which beach you go to we live near Atlantic Beach, and Emerald Isle don't go over there much except when the grandchildren are down during the summer. God bless you and your family |

Thanks Rosie that there is a very good analogy. Jack and May-K, thank y'all too! Denise - We go down to surf city, down around Holly Ridge. They got two piers, the Surf City Pier and the Jolly Rogers Pier. We usually go the the Surf City one cause they don't allow drinkin. |

| Good story but when the kids aren't with ya I wish you'd go on over to the drinkin' pier 'cause that's where you can really find someone who needs to hear the message! After all, isn't that where Jesus would go? |

Denise & Janet - Yeah that other pier can get kinda dangerous, especially cause we usually fish at night time. Most of the drinkers don't get crazy-drunk, but theres always somebody that cain't control themselves. Jason - thanks man Chris - lol, that's a good one. |
