They ran away from codependant women.

oh man.  What an awful song.  Though, to be fair - the guy described is a not-so-stellar man himself.  :-p

I KNOW where the cowboys have gone. They've gone to Bandera, Texas, a little town south of me that bills itself as "the Cowboy Capital of the World." Downtown Bandera is full of saloons and dance halls. Once a year they have a cattle drive through town, headed up with longhorns. That part of Texas is kind of rugged and mostly ranches and so we are talking real cowboys. Over in Luchenbach Texas, to the east of me, you'll find a few real cowboys and lots of wantabes.

Just a little Texas Trivia for you guys. All of Texas is not like that. Lots of diversity here.

I'm sure they're just following the flowers (in a folk song reference no one is likely to get).

Where Have All The Cowboys Gone

Oh you get me ready in your 56 chevy
Why don't we go sit down in the shade
Take shelter on my front porch
The dandy lion sun scorching,
Like a glass of cold lemonade
I will do laundry if you pay all the bills

CHORUS:

Where is my John Wayne
Where is my prairie song
Where is my happy ending
Where have all the cowboys gone

Why don't you stay the evening
Kick back and watch the TV
And I'll fix a little something to eat
Oh I know your back hurts from working on the tractor
How do you take your coffee my sweet
I will raise the children if you pay all the bills

Chorus

I am wearing my new dress tonight
But you don't, but you don't even notice me
Say our goodbyes
Say our goodbyes
Say our goodbyes

We finally sold the chevy
When we had another baby
And you took the job in tennessee
You made friends at the farm
And you joined them at the bar
Almost every single day of the week
I will wash the dishes while you go have a beer

Chorus

Where is my Marlboro man
Where is his shiny gun
Where is my lonely ranger
Where have all the cowboys gone
Where have all the cowboys gone
Where have all the cowboys gone

Yippee aw, yippee yea (6 times)

Given Paula Cole is from Massachussetts, that could explain why she couldn't find any.

She could have been born in Texas

Actually when I said she was from Massachussetts, I meant that's where she was born. :)

I originally was curious whether this was the song I remembered (because it's been a long time since I've heard it), so I went to "The Google".

Based on your comment though, I now had to check out whether Texas played a part.  The short answer (Boston, New York, San Francisco) = nope.

That's it, I'm planning a trip to Bandera TX to find out where all the cowboys have gone, then it's on to Kerrville!  ~mike

Never heard the song either Pastor Tim, and now that I read the words, it makes no sense to me at all..........guess you'd have to be there.

I find the song to be codependent because all the singers happiness is dependant on someone else's behavior/persona/career choice.

Uh, hello?  I live in Montana.  Lonesome Dove mean anything to you guys?  The cowboys are here, wearing their cowboy hats and boots and their Stranglers.  :-)

Mike~ and anyone else~~If you come to Kerrville, let me know! And consider visiting Impact Christian Fellowship on (believe it or not) Goat Creek Road. A wonderful church.

Jen~I hadn't heard "Stranglers" before. Good one! And I agree, Wyoming is cowboy country, too.

Jess~ You're right, she is codependent.

Norm, Zach~ "when will they ever learn?"

I love these conversations!  I have no idea where they will end up =D

"When will they ever learn"?  Now the conversation has meandered to Peter Paul and Mary (i.e. "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?")

Thanks All!  This is delightful!

That song is more than codependent it is just wrong. A tractor??? Where was his horse. Can't imagine John Wayne on a tractor! Though I have nothin against tractors. I love to ride my husbands wannabe tractor our John Deere riding lawn mower... (though my husband got so mad when he found out John Deere does't really make their riding lawn mowers... too much to pay for just the bright green and yellow paint) LOL

I know of a codependent song that beats that. I don't remember the name or artist. It was sung by a female and it must have come out in the 80's because I was forced to listen to it during my steak house waitressing days. The women threaten her husband that she was going to open up a bar in her house... pool table in the living room. neon sign pointing to the restroom and sell beer by the bottle, inviting her husband's friends... all so she could keep him at home. I almost considered that option as a plan back then sadly (praise the Lord my hubby has been sober since 1990!!) I was so co-dependent I gave away my "Co-dependent No More" book to someone I thought needed it more than me. (Kinda like hearing a sermon and thinking of all the people that needed to be hearing it and not thinking to be listening good myself!)

Ah..... Peter Paul and Mary.  That brings back memories. :Where have all the Flowers Gone", "If I had a Hammer" " The Cruel War is Raging (No My Love No). We actually sang those songs in my youth group back in high school. I belonged to a demonination back then that didn't use instruments during worship. We got a new younger Pastor that came from being a Jr.High Football Coach. At Youth on Sunday nights he would bring his guitar to play and because they didn't believe in singing worship or praise songs with a guitar we would sing Peter, Paul, and Mary songs. Strange I know... defeating some greater purpose there??? The Elders put a stop to it a few weeks down the road but the only excuse they came up with was that someone might walk by outside the church and think we were having a dance. They just didn't know one never dance to Peter Paul and Mary songs. You sang them sitting down with your legs crossed looking cool and maybe saying "Peace Brother" now and then with two fingers up. People can be so silly sometimes you know. I now worship where there is a band that has a jazz sax and electric guitars. I sometimes kind of dance too and might say "Peace, Lord Jesus, I need Your Peace" with two hands up. =^)

Lol!

outside the church and think we were having a dance

Some denominations can't kiss standing up, because it looks too much like dancing.
