Deb,

I was never allowed to dress up in those ghoulish outfits either.

Christmas is the Christian festival that supersedes the Feast of Saturnalia, celebrating the winter solstice.

Easter is taken from the Babylonian festival for Ishtar - the goddess of fertility, celebrating the time of the year when new things are being born.

All Saints day is the attempt to reclaim this Wicca festival for a Christian event.  So, why not?  Why not take what many see as a purely catholic day (all saints day and make it a celebration that we as all Christians can commemorate?  And take both days - All Hallows day as well as the day before, All Hallows' Een?

Christmas is being reclaimed by the popular culture again.  We can be different but we can also be influential and stand out.

Gene,

I agree with you, reclaim or restate the meaning.   There is nothing stopping Christians from doing that... so why won't they?

As for me, when I know better, I do better.  Once I learned the true meaning of all ... I made a decision to not participate.  I don't do Holloween, I don't do Christmas (yes I do celebrate the set aside birth of our Lord Jesus) but I don't go shopping, I don't do Easter (yes I do celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus) but I don't go shopping.

We allow ourselves to be manipulated by society at large when we don't have to.   I can buy gifts at any time of the year and give.   Christmas is about sharing "The Gift"  not going out and maxing out your credit card and Santa Claus...

Just me and my one woman stand.

I don't let my children celebrate Holloween.  I explain to them what it is and why we don't do it.  They understand and agree that it is not the right thing for us to do.  We also do not celebrate "Santa" during Christmas...but Jesus birthday...even though it's the wrong time of the year.  We give three gifts to each of our boys because Jesus got three gifts.  Not expensive gifts either.  We sing happy birthday to Jesus and my grandma gets a birthday cake for him every year for our Christmas supper.  We do not hunt eggs or celebrate with the easter bunny.  We keep the focus on Christ.

It's tough to stand on what you believe.  Especially when others in the church and family do it.  But we have desided that for our family...we will not celebrate the world's way.

It makes me sad to see other Christian celebrating Holloween especially, but they have to make that decision between themselves and God.

My goal is to protect my children and guard their hearts while they are in my care.  I try my best, but don't always do the right thing.

Pastor,

I wish I knew why they didn't reclaim or restate.  Anybody got a clue out there?

We participate but we send Christian Christmas cards.  We also celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas and His resurrection at Easter.  And our church has big celebrations to that effect - hopefully something to keep people's mind on the "importance" of those days rather than simply "on those days."

I've often thought that we need, in someways, to act like Jews with regard to these holidays.  Recognize that there is a cultural aspect to them, yet still keep our religion strong and not be swayed by the societal conventions.  After all, we are aliens in this world.  We should be able to act like it.

Great topic, Deb.

We do not celebrate Halloween, but our church holds a fall festival instead. This is an attempt to bring some out of darkness and into His marvelous light. I was driving through town the other day, and the city had tied up these dead pretend ppl to the post in the town square. I had such an eery feeling about it, because I know that there was a day long ago that you could see that very type of insane things happen. Especially to the racially charged areas during the civil war. I hated those stupid dummies being displayed through town square. I realize it is all suppose to be fun and games, but thats not fun.
I am up for a good hay ride, or corn maze, or a apple dunking contest, or something like that. NOW THATS FUN!

Hum, this has my wheels turning.  Can you smell the smoke?  LOL!  The Lord put some things on my heart about Christmas....hum!  Great topic.

There are many good things in our society that were "taken back" from pagan origins.  Christmas is a greate example.  This was originally the celebration of the winter solstice among Germanic tribes.  The idea of "Jesus is the reason for the season" isn't exactly accurate (but relevant in my opinion - its become a Christian holiday over a couple thousand years).

We allow ourselves to be manipulated by society at large when we don't have to.

Pastor Aminata this is an excelent observation.  Is it me, or does the Church at large tend to react in immature ways when we see the world being worldly?

Dana, try recognizing St Nicholas on December 6th and Jesus birthday on the 25th.  In Europe, the Feats of St Nicholas (from whence we get the term Santa Claus) recognizes this real man who served as a local bishop in the early church many centuries ago and who gave gifts in order to help those less fortunate.  Our youth pastor did a whole series on that to get the kids to recognize the origins of our social festivities and reclaim them - at least for themselves.

I think it's easier with Christmas and Easter.  Halloween is another thing altogether.  I think we need at least try the ghoulishness out of it and avoid any Wiccan influences.
Dana

We read a book on St Nicholas.  Very interesting.  We tell the boys that anyone who gives them a gift is Santa...speaking of the real man and what he did.

JessIAm messaged me with a good point.   Let me clarify something...

"It makes me sad to see other Christian celebrating Holloween especially, but they have to make that decision between themselves and God."

I didn't want to go into a story so I generalized and it didn't quite come out right.  I have a few friends who shared with me that they think celebrating Holloween is wrong but do so because of pressure from friends and family.  It breaks my heart to see them go through this struggle.  There is nothing I can say that will amount to a hill of beans...it will have to come from the Holy Spirit.

In a nutshell.  I hope that clarifies.  Thanks JessIAm.

I leave it between that person and God, much like you seem to be saying, but I knew the roots of it, so I don't want to "celebrate" it.  One thing we do is give out candy.  Last Halloween,  I made good treat bags with sayings on it pertaining to things of Halloween like vampires:  I'd say something like "Want to live forever?  Choose Jesus."  Then I would have a Bible verse on the other side.  Plus I wrote tracks of my own for two age groups; the children and the teens, and dropped it in their bags with everything else.  It is a perfect opportunity to sow some seed!

Lara, great.  My grandma does that.  I live out in the woods so no kids come to my house. That is an excellent opportunity to put some light in darkness.  Keep up the good job!  You might be bringing Jesus to someone who has never heard of him.  Evangelize girl!!!!!

I think you have to figure out what is right in your area...we have a fall festival, too, and it is a lot of fun to get together. There is one church in the area that allows the kids to dress up like Bible characters - nothing wrong with that.  We don't give out candy - usually - and more than once our house has been egged.  Oh well.  I don't let my kids go door to door - not because it is Halloween so much, but I don't think it is right to teach them to demand candy.  I break it down to the very basic idea.

Great blog Deb!!

What a great response to this topic!  Thanks to all of you for all the comments (and the stars).

Gene, I like all that you said, but this is the best...I've often thought that we need, in someways, to act like Jews with regard to these holidays.  Recognize that there is a cultural aspect to them, yet still keep our religion strong and not be swayed by the societal conventions.  After all, we are aliens in this world.  We should be able to act like it.  If only we could keep our religion strong and not be swayed by society.

Pastor Aminata, I still do some shopping for Christmas, but I don't go all out like I used to.  I just feel that it makes the meaning of Christmas get lost.  My biggest enjoyment at Christmas time is being in church celebrating with my Christian family.

Dana, I commend you for what you are doing with your children.  I think that is fantastic!  I don't have kids, but if I did, I would want them to know the real meanings behind the holidays.  Good for you for sticking to what you believe in, making a decision and standing by it.  To me, Easter is the MOST important holiday of the year, and not because of the Easter Bunny!  Too many forget that and it gets lost in egg hunts and candy.

Shannon, I can just picture the bodies tied to the post.  That is not a good picture for little children!  I have heard a lot of churches have fall festivals, and I think that is a good idea.

Jess, I don't think it is just you.  The church can act immature when it sees the world being worldly.

Lara, what a great idea for the treats you hand out.  We don't have trick or treat in my neighborhood, basically because we are so far away from town, but if we did, I would do something like this.

DC, I remember one year, we lived in Michigan at the time, and my husband had already gotten another job back here, so he was in Ohio and I was in Michigan trying to sell our home.  I was home alone on Halloween, and since I was there alone, I didn't want to hand out candy.  I can remember wondering how many eggs I would have to clean up, but it never happened.  No one seemed bothered by the fact that I wasn't handing out treats.

Rosie, I guess you have to let the parents make the decisions.  Maybe someday they will figure out differently and change their minds.

My family and I do a harvest party at our home. We celebrate harvest time for the Lord. We may dress up but just for fun, like a bible character and ask questions about the character. We bake cookies and cut up a pumpkin just to get the seeds out to bake. The kids don't carve a face or anything just get to make a huge mess, which is fun for our kids. We don't make a big deal out of halloween. I don't celebrate it, I celebrate all the harvest that God has brought into our lives. My kids don't eat candy. I know that is amazing itself but they don't like it. Anyways I thought I would express what I and my family do to have some fun. Good blog.

Misse, thanks for sharing what you do at Halloween time.  I can't believe your kids don't eat chandy, but I guess if you raise them without it, they don't know what they are missing.  My dad had a sweet tooth, so there was ALWAYS candy in the house, so I grew up on it, and still love it!  Bad for me!

I was born on Halloween, my name is Hal. I speaks wit awe-thority.. hear me! (LOL)

I remember when our Christian college had a "spook house" and when Campus Crusade or the Navigators had a spook house as well. Not so much anymore though. We have a church in our neck of the woods that does something called "Judgement House."  Here is a link on an evangelical outreach like theirs.

http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061028/NEWS/610280443/1326

I talked to the leadership after they put it on. The church felt that it was agreat opportunity for discussion afterwards and said that quite a few decisions were made as a result of their work.

We at WCBF have a harvest party for our little ones. It is witchless, spookless and monsterless and occultless. It is not however, candy-less. Our little ones come dressed as any costume party...pirates...ballplayers... police...firemen...star wars figures, we just say leave out the occult stuff.

Having said all that  Hal doesn't know, after all!

Here is the ultimate in costume party goers:
7:15 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. 7:16 By their fruits ye shall know them. Do `men' gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 7:20 Therefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Ohh my --this turned into a blog, not a comment. <ooops!>

Gene
October 18, 2007 at 1:43pm
Now I'm afraid to go to Hall's party in a sheep costume - or a wolf - or even a tree.  I think I should go as a fruit.  (Shannon, no comments now, , , ).  Actually, I've been to costume parties before in that same theme.  We had pumpkin carving contests and "surprise" deserts (everything was covered in foil so you had no idea what you got until you got it.  My wife and I went as m&m's - plain and peanut.

So it's possible to enjoy the time and festivities without bowing to the weird and cultish.

Our church has a fall festival.  It's great.  Rock climbing wall, bouncy house, booth games, gifts, a clown...it's a great alternative to halloween.  The neighborhood kids come.  The men cook hotdogs and hamburgers.  It is a fun, fun, fun day of family time.

Deb

Gene, if you go as a fruit, what kind will you be?  I agree it is possible to enjoy Halloween and not bring in the occult, and if that happens, then I am all for it.  It just scares me that so many people out there are worshiping other things and doing other things that go against God...but then He has it all in His control, doesn't He?

Dana, The fall festival that our church has sounds like a lot of fun, for kids and grown ups alike!

Chrissy, I am taking a look at your blog as soon as I finish up here.  Halloween can be sued for good things too.
Gene
October 22, 2007 at 12:56pm
Sorry for the delay, Deb.  I was traveling this past weekend.  What fruit would I be, what fruit. . . . ?
Probably an apple.  Passion fruit could be taken the wrong way; grapefruit would be a wonderful play on words but a yellow blob would look like an m&m.  An orange looks like a different m&m.  Grapes would be good but I'd probably get asked if I was the fruit of the loom guy.  Oh, well!  There goes the apple idea.

I know!  A pineapple!  It's neither pine nor apple but something different. And the most popular type comes from a place other than it's place of origin.  It can appear prickly on the outside but is usually sweet on the inside.  It is the universal symbol of welcome and hospitality.  And, not easily confused with other fruits.  Seems to me that's a pretty good fruit for Christians.

I've noticed a number of blogs about this topic.  I just felt we should all remember something.  I'm reminding myself to - I can be just as opinionated as anyone.

Romans 14:1-5
1  AS FOR the man who is a weak believer, welcome him [into your fellowship], but not to criticize his opinions or pass judgment on his scruples or perplex him with discussions.
2  One [man's faith permits him to] believe he may eat anything, while a weaker one [limits his] eating to vegetables.
3  Let not him who eats look down on or despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains criticize and pass judgment on him who eats; for God has accepted and welcomed him.
4  Who are you to pass judgment on and censure another's household servant? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he shall stand and be upheld, for the Master (the Lord) is mighty to support him and make him stand.
5  One man esteems one day as better than another, while another man esteems all days alike [sacred]. Let everyone be fully convinced (satisfied) in his own mind.

Well, I wasn't a pineapple - didn't dress up to hand out candy.

We had only about two dozen kids come through.  Each got to take a small handful of candy from the bucket.

The neighbors down the street who attend our church came as "Dash" from the Incredibles and a character from Zelda (the video game).  We had a number of witches, ballerinas, devils, skeletons and pirates.

I think it's great that the kids can make fun of scary things for one night out of the year.  There's enough scary stuff out there that counts.

A penny was worth something before?  When?  Not in my generation!!!  LOL
My church had a 'penny' carnival and played games, did crafts and had a huge campfire and ate smores together - plus they all got loads of candy.  I was home sick and did not hand out candy.  God has clearly placed it upon our hearts not to celebrate halloween.  I sat in bed with my puppy and I felt a 'heaviness' upon me (not from me being sick), but from me hearing the people outside... the teenagers talking about freaky stuff etc.,  My heart was sad.  I had this intense feeling of not liking the world very much lastnight!  Seriously. My puppy, who is usually "Ms. Barky" did not bark once lastnight... instead she snuggled close to my side.  That is my least favorite day of the year.  All night long I had nightmares and had to bind up Satan from trying to attack me.  It was a restless night but I am victorious in the morning!  Jesus has already won that battle for me!
