Biker Babe is goin' thru a bi-polar moment...her evil twin has come up a great ? that we need 2 know the answer 2....

Church is going N the direction that we R not comfortable with (the diplomatic words of my evil twin over looking the screen above my shoulder...Yes we R havibg fun...but...we R also dead serious....

The evil twin is coming.......
Biker Babe and I have been blessed for many years and ways in a spiritual friendship that defies understanding (we call it a God thing). We are as different as night and day, but we understand each other in ways that challenge us both to grow (I like to say that we translate for each other, so others can receive what we say, when our outward appearances don’t blend in (I serve in the traditional church and she serves in the inner city church). Because of our friendship, we have learned an enormous amount of tolerance, understanding and compassion for each other and others. We have an appreciation for differences and how some of the best blessings in life may arrive in packaging that we may not expect. Truly, our relationship is so special that words cannot do it justice.
We talk at length about the future of the church. We read the books that talk about post- modern, emergent and liminal. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, we are both beyond emergent! We are actually driven to figure out how to create a new church model (we’re serious). BTW, we both love MyChurch and enjoy learning and being challenged by what many have to say about their faith. We also know that there are many of you on this site that have much insight into the questions we are about to ask (there is much discontent out there with traditional churches and we see that many are searching for the same answers). Biker Babe and I (along with a few other friends) have been praying about this topic in earnest for 1 ½ years now.
We have been praying and talking about how to reach people who are unchurched (and in reality turned off by the church). In our opinions, the most relevant question for the 21st Century is:
How do we “do church” in way that will meet people’s needs and spread the Gospel at the same time?
So, if you have given this topic any thought and have something to share, we want to hear what you have to say.
If you are reading this and do not attend church for whatever reason, we especially want to hear what you have to say on this blog.

We don't do Church in my opinion, we become the Church! and i do understand what you mean when you say "DO Church" but it is not a statment that comes from the word of God;
One of the sadest things that is going on in the world today is,
we have tried to Change The mandate for church, for sharing the gosple, and for eveything else, that God has intended it to be.
As a result we have come up with every way to please people "This does not work because" you can't please every body all the time! God never said "whosoever is pleased" but he did say "Whosoever will let him come" That "COME" means come to Christ, not to a church building,but we are also told "not to forsake the assembling of ourselves" So what do we do?
We Go to a Church that is teaching and preaching the word of God! Not to one that is geared to the people and there egos, but one that is gered to God!
You might think this is hard to do, but the truth is this. IF everyone that names the name of Christ would become the church as Christ see's it We would do fine.

The way to be church is to live in relationship - relationship with God and with one another. How we "do " this on the ground is what you're asking. You need to know what the unchurched want? have you talked with any of them? What do they say? What is "church" to the unchurched?" Before you can offer an answer, you need to ask the question.

Dear BB and MB (or MB and BB),
First of all, let me say that I understand and empathize with your "evil twin" situation...I think. I saw a bumpersticker once that read "I'm schizophrenic...and so am I".
To the point of your question, I believe we both ARE the church, and we DO church. The comments above are all helpful. A lot of the problems people have with Christians and Christianity right now stem from the fact that the church (which is supposed to be a community of believers in the process of being transformed into HIS likeness) simply does not ACT like the believing community is supposed to act. What's more, I don't believe most Christians, at least here in the US, CANADA, etc., have any kind of clear idea as to what the church is supposed to look like. It's kinda like setting out on a trip and not knowing what your destination really is. How can you possibly map out a route that way? We've become so accusomed to speaking a private language of God-talk that sounds spiritual but has little or no concrete definition. Is it possible that God has a very clear and practical notion of what's supposed to be happening, and we're just not "getting it"? Could it be that what we're called to is so radically counter to what we currently live that we don't even have a grid for grasping it? Maybe we need a little of of that "having your minds transformed" stuff...and a bit having our hearts softened and spirits renewed as well?!?
I liked what Percussion said. "Love". Period. How that plays out is going to be different in different contexts. But that's what drives it all. Love God with everything we are, and love each other the same way. Press deeper and deeper into intimate relationship with Father, Son and Spirit. Not something we assent to, but something we do. Love on Him. Spend time with Him. Listen to Him. Love on each other. Spend time with each other. Listen to each other. Become addicted to being, individually and corporately, immersed in and hammered by His Presence. And abandoned to being formed and transformed by that Presence and Love and Power and Will.
I hit on this stuff alot on my blog. See Tribes, or A Safe Place For Crazy People. God IS in the process of raising up a different kind of church, both inside and outside the walls of the institution. An emerging community of folks who are just growing tired of faith that "kind of" works and "kind of" connects with Him. Real people who are hungry and desperate for the real thing. I think the thing that emerges from all this may take forms that are quite unexpected. Because hungry desperate and abandoned people have been known to do some unexpected and unusual things. |

Mission Blue- Tell your friends that don't go to church because of Hypocricy, Judgemental, and Holier than thow attitudes that they can find that at McDonalds too. Are they going to quit going there? If they already don't go there then pick a place that they like to go. The point is you can find that kind of stuff anywhere. Thats NOT a good reason to not go to church. I used to have that idea about church too. People make up the church. That means that like people the church has its own personality. There is one out there that will suit them but they might have to shop for it.

Which ever Church you go to is the church you have been called to. If you think the church you go to is right then so be it. If you think the church we go to is the wrong one then, you know what to do to make it right. Go ahead and change it. The problem is not that. We are dealing with people. We have to imitate as Jesus did. Church is for sinners to be brought in and overhauled. They have to be set right. Once set right they become the temple of God. It is not a court where some decide that the other needs to be sent to eternal fire and eternal life. Reserve that for Jesus. Go into the church get healed and tell others where their soul can be healed. |

Ragland has the right idea. Church is where two or more are gathered in His name. We are all sinners and we all need to be collected and grow up together. I like Percussion's comment about McDonald's. Too true. We're dealing with people here. People are flawed. Oh, isn't that the reason for Christ's salvation in the first place?
But I still like the original question - how do we gather as a body of believers in a more authentic way that reached the people of THIS generation rather than those of the 1950's? |

They craft them to tickle the itching ear, and we want them to have a “High Entertainment Index”. Unfortunately, these kind of meetings have very little of our sacrificial love poured out to Him who alone deserves our ministries, our praise, our worship! God would rather have moments with a FEW who really love Him than for everyone to come and be entertained. Yet we are hosting a party for God in which we trade presents with each other while totally ignoring Him. If we as the Church Body of Christ start looking into His face, worship Him, and abide in Him, He will transform us to go out and inside the walls of our church, and take care of the poor, widows, children, homeless, and naked. We need to change ourselves before we can have ministries adequate for those yet to come not to have to even say, for those that are here right now. We are not teaching the children of all ages how to die with Christ, so as to be raised into the wonderful, beautiful life in God’s Kingdom that is with us now. Eternity starts here and now. Christ died so that we no longer had to stay on the opposite side of the veil. Christ ripped that veil in two between the holies of holies and man. Christ did this while He was dying on the cross for the lost sinners in the world. Eternity is starting fresh each new day. On this earth we can chose to be inside the walls of His kingdom, or outside of the walls where there is still blindness because of the darkness away from the light of the Savior. Effective ministries can only be built in a well light workshop! |

| Thanks, MB. GTG. BB, re what you wrote about the synods, etc realizing the hunger of folks for the "real thing": I had lunch a while back with the pastor of a major megachurch here. We were talking about just this, and about how a 'service' will move through the process week after week...announcements, worship, collection, sermon, song, benediction, invitation to prayer...and still most folks are up and out the door ASAP. Regardless of the content of the message or the intensity of the worship. So I asked, even in church, why do people who behind the scenes have lives just a messed up as yours or mine, come in week after week and hear from God and still walk away rather than doing business right then and there? He got real quiet, teared up, and said, "I think its because nobody ever gives them permission to be desperate." |

"Where's the Body?" (1 Cor 12:19)
The kingdom of God is just God. Jesus, the only mediator, died to bring us into direct and unmediated relationship with God. The true servants of God connect the people to their head: Christ; and, they secure and enlarge that connection. They bring forth a group led by the gifts, intentionally moving without human headship and preventing any who would take over from doing so in order to have no other Elohim before Him. As sons of God, we will be led of the Spirit in our meetings, every member participating. True servants of God bring about a gathering of bodies as the flesh of God in the earth in whom is the Spirit sent in Jesus' name and among whom is their ascended head manifesting as Lord of the meeting.
This "many...as one...Christ" (1 Co. 12:12) is another form than that crucified Adam who is separate flesh-husk units containing souls. Their soilish and soulish authority is external (ours is internal), theirs is titled (whereas, we're all just brothers), theirs is official (but, in the bride there are no offices, it's an organic and corporate life-form, Jesus' presence coming into manifestation) and theirs is hierarchical (but we are free and in direct union with our Lord.)
Jesus defined Gentile (or of the nations, civil) authority as other than the reign of God. "Their great ones exercise authority over them." Jesus says that among those under His discipline "it is not so;" not, "it shouldn't be so." We are the beginning of the end as part of that re-heading all things with Christ ( Eph 2.) All authority will be abolished (1 Co.15.) Everything filled and covered"with the glory of the knowledge of the LORD" means nothing can do anything but right and without any influencing authority needed. "The law is for the lawless." "Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty." The mature law is liberty (Jas.1); so, elders preserve the liberty. Thus it is apparent there are few elders in the churches today.
When God tells the "story" of the church (mostly in the book of Acts) He never mentions a pastor. The verb form is used by Paul (in Acts) when he warns the Ephesian elders to be "shepherding" the flock by guarding against those who would rise up from among them and lead away disciples unto themselves. Who in todays commonly accepted church form is raised up over the others to instruct and discipline them? Who there today has the keys yet neither enter in themselves nor allow those about to enter to do so? At the end of the 1500's the Lutheran Pietists began to call their priests "pastors." Now no one else can get a crumb. All the trouble in Corinth and Paul' last court of appeals is the local church "brethren" (Greek not masculine, but neuter, "those from a common womb,") a word occurring 350 to 400 times. Of the 16 times "pastor" (poimen) occurs, only once does it relate to other than those who care for woolly quadrupeds (4 times) and the person of Jesus Himself, the Good, the Great Shepherd. That once is plural and connected with instructors as "shepherding-teachers." It shouldn't be extracted without warrant from the Eph. 4:11 list and used to justify our modern practice.
How can so much of what claims to be God's defy the first commandment (by having other mediators) and prevent the second that is like unto it? 58 times in the New Testament "one-anothering" is commanded. Just try it about 11:30 Sunday morning and you'll find out soon enough what else the ushers are there for!
In our workshop gatherings, to fulfill God's intention to make each of us in His image and likeness, we are all to exercise to our own spiritual development and critique each other's expression. This includes public correction where everybody learns and those mistaken find they're loved; unlike when they're separated as a first Adam, subordinated privately to another as controller. We are to come into all that He is and does. When we were "born-again" the person of Jesus came into us. We received Him, not just a part of Him. He's the apostle, prophet, evangelist and more beyond the 4 categories (of Eph. 4:11) called the 5-fold ministry. They're not an hierarchical stack of successively greater authorities, the apostle the biggest boss of them all. These functions are in us if He is in us. They aren't static callings as when many, with their mind on the pulpit think this one's an evangelist, that, a teacher, and so on. Rather, the measure is Christ the Word who is the Image and Glory of God. We're called out unto Him.
The shepherding teachers increase in evangelizing, then deepen in the mystery to be more prophetic. Ongoing growth in experience produces those "specially sent ones" who in turn pursue victory over death. It's just a matter of growing up. As our availability to Him increases we progress on from one degree of expression to another greater ability to impart Him until we ALL come to the fullness of Christ.
But, instead of trusting the Holy Spirit, we've become audiences for professional preachers. I WENT TO CHURCH BUT THE CHURCH WASN'T ON THE PROGRAM! Not size of crowds, nor how well I can prophesy or see those healed I lay hands on; rather, my measure of ministry is how much of the expression of Christ I can raise up in others. I don't care how anointed, how gifted and knowledgeable the man on stage is. He's not the body of Christ! and, JESUS WANTS HIS BODY BACK!!!

I think BB4C blog on Immanuel posted lately, shows the type of people that need 2 start acting N the churches around the world, 2 answer the question N your blog. I cut and paste below. I think the USA is N the most desparate need of this Universiyr SOHK type Training.
