| Atheist Becomes Deist, Convinced by Design |

A new book by Antony Flew just came out. If you young guys are not familiar with Antony Flew, Flew was probably the world's most prominent and outspoken atheist for four decades. In 2004 he retained enough intellectual integrity to follow his life-long mantra: "follow the evidence wherever it leads." His transition from atheism to deism (not Christianity...yet) was brought about mostly by the design argument. He wrote recently, "It has become inordinately difficult even to begin to think about constructing a naturalistic theory of the evolution of that first reproducing organism."
It is rare for someone to retract an opinion once it has been published. It is even more rare for someone to retract a worldview. Flew is an exceptional case. I haven't read Flew's newest book (right), but the reviews I've read suggest it might be a good one, although Christians should be warned that not all he says lines up well with Christianity. Afterthought: In 2004, an interview between Flew and a long-time Christian friend of his, Gary Habermas, can be read here. In it, Flew says Christianity and its scriptures are leagues above any other religion, especially Islam. I hope this blog is useful to my readers and their atheist friends. |
