| Was Jesus Guilty of Nepotism? |
|
| |
10:1 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. 10:2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zeb'edee, and John his brother; 10:3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 10:4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Nepotism - don't you just hate that word? Occasionally we hear of politicians who awarded government contracts to family members. Some large businesses are so concerned with avoiding any appearance of evil, that families are broken up and not allowed to work together. Yet, all across the country there are thousands of family businesses where husbands and wives and sons and daughters work closely together. Their businesses and marriages and families are often healthier because of it. What if the most qualified person for the job actually IS a family member? Should we discriminate because some have abused the privilege, because of favoritism? Jesus' first disciples, those who became the apostles, the founding fathers of the early church, included a couple of brothers, Peter and Andrew. Throughout the Bible, we see many families who were used by God for great purposes. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are only one example. Family businesses, family ministries and family members hiring family members are often the best thing. More than ever, family is important. |

I think Nepotism has a negative connotation to it in our society, even though the word is neutral. Nepotism just means "favoritism based kinship." That isn't necessarily a bad thing. We only hear about the situations where it's abused. |

Wow...I did not even know what "Nepotism" was before I read this post. I so am impressed by the two comments. I think of how neighbors, families, and friends use to just come together to help each other out during the weekend, or week evenings. Start a garden by someone showing up with a plow...putting a roof on a barn, when the light was shown in to bright for the cows...do you know about this stuff? I think family businesses that add employeees that become friends, and sometimes relatives over time, is how the America's as well as the "Old world" was built. Grant...what is it like in your culture? |

This comment is not exactly on topic but as I read the title of your post "The Christianity of Christ" I was reminded of something that was brought to my attention not too long ago. The following statement may startle you at first, I know it did me:
Jesus was not a Christian!
Agree? |

| I quite agree! He was the Christ! Christian ought to mean follower of Christ, but what is too often the case is that Christians first follow a man, or a fad, or a tradition, and following Christ is somehow buried under all that stuff. Christians ought to FIRST follow Christ, and then if there's room for anything else, that is fine, but Christ is the Head of the Church and NO ONE else. |
