| When you pray for grass..... |

..... you'd better get a wheelbarrow ---
O.K. So it doesn't sound as good as "When you pray for rain, carry an umbrella", but the point is the same.
We built this house in the spring of 2005. We moved in at the end of June 2005 and we had money in savings for a fence and sod. However, soon after we moved in, Mike and I separated and that money was gone.
I spent almost two full years in this new house with a clay yard and no fence. It was so depressing. I couldn't possibly afford sod or fence.
Well, just around the corner from us there were several houses being built last spring. Jonathan noticed that they were just tossing their excess sod to the curb. I called the builder and asked if we could have it, and he said that we could. So for several days, Jonathan went back and forth carrying small loads of sod from the curb to our yard. We arranged it in little patches and prayed that it would spread.
Finally with my income tax return, I was able to purchase a chain length fence (very necessary with Timothy!) and two pallets of sod. It was a very exciting day for us. We had such a fun time laying the sod -- but two pallets didn't go very far, and that was all my budget allowed.
Here were are 2.5 years after moving in, and I still have more clay than grass in my yard. As pety as this sounds, I pray for grass. I really dream of having a yard of green grass to be able to walk in and play in with Timothy.
Anyway, this afternoon, Jonathan noticed they were sodding the new house across the holding pond from us. They had a flat bed truck full of sod that they were throwing. We also noticed that they were just piling the left overs and scraps in a pile -- a HUGE pile.
So, I called the builder and asked if we could have the scraps. He said that would be fine. Well, of course I am working, and although we can see it, it's quite a distance away. So, Jonathan lined the back of the van (with the seats down) with a huge tarp, and on my dinner break, we drove around over there and loaded up the van with sod -- TWO FULL VAN LOADS!!! There was more that we could have gotten, but I had to get back to work.
It was at the very least a pallet that we got this evening. AND, there are quite a few other houses that are being built and almost ready to be sodded, and with the builder's permission again (same builder), we will get even more sod in the coming weeks.
The Lord provides for us in ways that may seem different than what we asked for. But you know.... I think my children will always remember these times of getting the scraps of sod that they know I have prayed for, than they would remember if we just had all the money in the world to buy pallets of sod. They are learning (and me too) that God provides for us in mysterious ways. |
