I think many Christians only look upon that part of Halloween that has been hijacked by non-Christians. There is a side of Halloween that early Christians used to celebrate. Some Christians today still do celebrate the original meaning. Its original meaning is found in All Saints' Eve or All Hallows' Eve. What is that?
Actually, for its first 3 centuries the Christian church was severely persecuted. Martyrs were highly honored for their faithfulness. The Church even picked a special day to remember them, All Saints' Day. The evening before that was All Saints' Eve or All Hallows' Eve. It was an evening to remember the righteous dead. Even that has been hijacked by later Catholic theology, but the original meaning is still good.
Perhaps that is why the demonic seems to enjoy that evening too, but let's not forget that it was a time of remembrance for our fallen comrades, Christian martrys. For me, that's the meaning I prefer to think about. I ignore the sadistic evil which has hijacked such a wonderful time of honoring all saints. The original meaning was one of honor and for me that is the meaning I retain. |
