I know a business man who started a bakery during the midst of a bad recession. He was so busy that hadn't even heard that there was a recession on, and his business was thriving. Then one day, somebody told him that things were really bad, there was a recession on. His business went downhill, simply because he began to fret and became overly cautious. He listened urgently to the daily news only to hear a constant diet of negativity: opposition politicians constantly undermining the government of the day, crime, wars, prices, diplomatic squabbles, union thuggery, you name it. His marriage and business went down hill. He lost everything.
12:18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. This man determined the cause was negativity in his life. He decided not to listen to the news any more. He restarted his business and it became one of the most successful in the region, adding a second and third bakery in other towns, attracting tourists and bringing employment to outback towns. He even went on the national speaking circuit, where I heard his story. One day, just out of curiousity, he listened to the news again. He had not heard it in many years. It was the same news he had heard 13 years before: the Jews and Arabs were still sending their grandchildren to kill each other, politicians were still criticizing and undermining the government of the day, and crime was still a problem. He shut the radio off and never listened again.
25:25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. What about the good news? Is there any? Of course there is! You just have to know where to look. You could set your Google start page with a search for things like <"good news" OR "great news" OR "wonderful news"> etc. Then you can read many wonderfully uplifting stories instead of the negativity that journalists rely upon to sell their news stories.
4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Yes, there is good news out there! It can actually do wonders for your health...and the best news of all is that God wants YOU to live with him forever! |
