| Famous Paintings - Modern Society |

Recently I re-editted my blog post about the incredible tools available on the internet to DIGITALLY look at three frescoes, up close and personal. These frescoes cannot be removed from the walls and studied closely as paintings can be --the only way to do so, would be to climb up on a scaffold and study it closely with a magnifying glass!
While looking at these masterpieces in this NEW way, it becomes apparent that the process used to communicate the artist's vision is both woefully inadequate yet wonderfully creative. The events that lead up to our Savior's crucifixion and ultimate resurrection, are hard to re-create in mere paint and plaster. Artists try to express the essence of heaven and spirituality in a way that is all so human.
All of this lead me to this thought while examining Ferrari's greatly detailed frescoe:
Imagine trying to paint the events of the crucifixion today as Ferarri did using the trappings of his "modern" society.
Soldiers would be wearing modern helmets with ornate decorations and black with gold trim body armor while leaning out of polished tricked out Humvees. Pilate, wearing a world leader's business suit and power tie under a robe, interviews Christ. Christ being beaten by poor ruffians and thugs wearing torn pants and jeans. The silky satin robed Bible characters would vie for our attention as MODERN clad citizens moved in and out of the scenes.
Incredible though that vision seems, it would be a fascinating indictment of our times, wouldn't it?
I am often besieged by the "NOW" and lose track of the True Future that awaits us as believers. We daily crucify Christ with our sinful attitudes, right now, in this very moment! Modern life clamors for our attention while our sensibilities languish in thoughts of what is the next new thing.
Thank God for his magnificent gift and sacrifice for us, that the name Jesus should be exalted high above all others.
He is King and lives NOW indeed! |
