Amen, Brother!  I like your pastor already.

"And if we are tempted to accuse and slander all pastors collectively, well, I can see how this could be perceived as both arrogant and ignorant. Ultimately, God deals with mankind individually. Shouldn’t we seek to do likewise?"

This statement, if you take out the word pastors, can be applied to everyone.  That is why I love to read your posts.  You are so positive.

Great post, Mike.  I am thrilled to be a member of a church with a pastor who is also not famous or rich.  He, too, would rather speak the truth of God's word to a few than tickle the ears of the masses.  Pastoring is a tough job.  As a former Preacher's Kid, I still remember those times when someone stopped by with a plate of brownies or just a hug and an encouraging word for my Dad.  I had such respect for those people who were sensitive enough to know their pastor - and his family - needed a little lifting up every now and then.

I just realized it's been awhile since I stopped by to encourage my pastor.  I'm on it.  Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for a great post, Mike.  It seems that the popular thing on MyChurch lately is to slam pastors and since I'm married to one, the posts tend to bruise the heart.  There are many - many- godly men who have answered the pastoral call and we don't need to forget that the calling came not from men, but from God.

Amen Bunny! Hey, I've seen the posts too, and they bother me as well. We have two hard working, conscientious pastors, and neither fits the harsh descriptions AT ALL. In fact quite the opposite.  Be encouraged, the vocal few do not represent the views of the majority. You will see, when this blog gets 80 stars!! (hehe)

Thanks Soozanne! Hey, a PK. (I knew that.) I appreciate reading your perspective, I'm sure you would have much to share on this topic!

Joey, THANK YOU!!!

Mike, I was truly touched by your blog. I can't tell you how much I appreciated what you said. I really mean that. I have been blessed by your blogs in the past, but this your best one yet. Thanks so much for encouraging me this evening.

As a matter of fact, I printed your blog for my wife to read.

Mike & Laura... GREAT blog; very humble, appreciative and respectful.   You have given your pastor a huge blessing, not to mention yourselves, by your seeds of love and thankfulness.   I have not personally read anything that blasted a pastor, but if it's happening, I truly hope none of 'us' are involved.   We need to stay separate from fleshly temptations to gossip or backbite and keep lifting up and encouraging our Godly pastors and men and women of God.
You write so amazingly well... you could wirte a BOOK.
Love and agreement... Minister Melanie

Amen!  what an amazing blessing.  it made me think:  when last did i tell my pastor that i appretiate what he's doing and when last did i encourage my pastors?  i'm in a mega church, and man, every pastor in that church preaches pure truth, not what the massas of people would like to hear.  i think i'll do it right now...

Amen to your blog about Pastors. The church that I attend is blessed with two pastors. They preach heaven sweet and hell hot. There has never been a feel good message preached as long as I have been a member. They not only talk the talk but they walk the walk. Praise God for all of our pastors who answer the call and are faithful to spread the gospel.

I adore my Pastor for many of the same reasons.  I've only been attending my church for about a year, but I feel like he really loves the Lord and is leading us to be better people in Christ.

Excellent post! Some pastors are stirring orators delivering a Sermon on the Mount EVERY week, some are great evangelists bringing MANY to Christ, some are wonderful with the teens mentoring and leading many to salvation, some are fantastic with the elderly encouraging them in life's last great exams. It doesn't matter whether they are famous or not, rich or poor, what imporesses me most is what you talked about, faithfulness to our Lord and their individual calling.

Wow, THANK YOU for the great comments!! Your pastors are honored and blessed, and I'm sure God is deeply pleased as well. I'm truly thankful for each and every one of you!! I wish I had time to reply to every individual comment, but time is short at the moment so I will only say....

MH (Tim), one of the points was that my pastor, great as he is, is not necessarily one in a million but certainly one of many. I wouldn't say that all pastors fit his mold, but I would say a great many do, perhaps even most. And definitely, way more than some people (here on MyChurch unfortunately, and elsewhere) allow for. People who criticize pastors they don't even know and have never met discourages me greatly, and it reveals those who know God far less than they might claim to.

Regardless if pastors are famous or not, they are to be honoured doubly.  The blessings of a congregation flow from the head down.  If your pastor is not abundantly blessed how can the sheep be?  The word honour means high respect; esteem; adherence to what is right or to a conventional standard of conduct : 2 a privilege  • an exalted position • a thing conferred as a distinction, esp. an official award for bravery or achievement : the highest military honors. • ( honors) a special distinction for proficiency in an examination : a title of respect given to or used in addressing a judge or a mayor. or your pastor.

Mike, I understand the deeper meaning of the kind jesture toward your pastor, however, I simply wanted to point out the need for honouring the men of God in each of our lives.  As a pastor, I must say we do not always get enough encouragement and support.  Even pastors who are in the limelight need our support because after all they are representing Christ.  I am so glad that I have not had to endure the mean-spirited words against pastors in a while. You are a wise man for sharing the kind things about your pastor.  I always say, the only way to know a man of God is to be Godly.  Okay, enough, "DR has left the pulpit."

Shalom, ~DR

My pastor is not rich or famous either. He is a humble, giving loving leader of a flock of sheep who simply adore him.  He was chosen by GOD and it is reflected in his leadership and in  his giving of himself to his people selflessly.  I chose a small church for the closeness that is in it. We know each other, truly know each other and the mega churches do not offer that. We can talk of our love for GOD and each other and truly feel blessed.

I have no opinions on the situation that is going on now because TRUTH will be revealed.  I thank my FATHER for placing me in a home that nourishes my soul and fills me with his love.

I totally agree with Mike here===>I wouldn't say that all pastors fit his mold, but I would say a great many do, perhaps even most. And definitely, way more than some people (here on MyChurch unfortunately, and elsewhere) allow for. People who criticize pastors they don't even know and have never met discourages me greatly, and it reveals those who know God far less than they might claim to.

I have been "inside" the church and functioning from the outside. My calling has been to equip the saints wherever they may be. That takes finances and resources.  As an individual or a small group you can only do so much. As a large group you can do so much more. Not saying the small groups don't have their place...just saying I found I could be so much more effective with a larger organization.

IMHO, it takes humility to be a servant leader. Some have it. Sounds like Mike's pastor is there.

If Pastors are not famous as described by you Mike, Praise God.  If they are otherwise also Praise God, there is an opportunity to create more Pastors as described by you. People consider Pastoing as one of the career options ( I am talking about my own church here) and some times the best of the people who are supposed to be  not famous pastors  dont end up in the churches. We as believers should take note of this and encourage good, uncorrupt, humble guys to take to become pastors. By the time one really thinks he can be  a good pastor, he becomes one of the remnant people and there is actually no support from his own pastoral colleagues. This is because believers dont practise the servant model of leadership in practical life.  The members of the congregation feel that servant model of leadership is only for pastors and not for others.  We must realise that the teachings of Christ are for all belivers and if we practise His teachings, the body of christ would attract many disciples for Jesus Christ.

Good blog Mike.  I would have to say your description of your pastor closely matches my pastor.  There may be some who are out for their own gain, but those that are truly serving God are visible disciples of His.

It is not always easy to find a good "home church" but I've had several really good pastors and the one I have now is humble, kind, loving and discerning. He also has great insight in the Word and is an excellent teacher. Our worship is outstanding. Our elders are mature, proven and grounded in the word. No one "lords" it over anyone else. I thank God for all of them.

Mike this is such a beautiful tribute to your Pastor.  You didn't have to say these things, and that speaks to the type of person you are.  After reading this blog this morning, it triggered something within me that had me crying for most of the morning.  It made me realize just how blessed I am and what a wonderful Pastor I also have.

Pastor are just mere mortals with a call upon their lives, they are not perfect, don't know all the answers, and yes even make mistakes, but there are many sincere, hardworking, men and women who are doing what they called to do, and that is to feed His sheep.  It's a good thing from time to time to stop and say, hey I appreciate your labor of love.   Thanks Mike for reminding me/us and thanks for raising the bar....

Mike,

While I was shopping in my underwear today, I thought, "I'm sure glad that I don't have to talk about money this Sunday!"

Seriously Mike, we feel totally refreshed and honored by your thoughtful words!

While starring your blog seems a bit self-serving, I still have to do it... for all those other pastors out there that can use your awesome encouragement.

I feel blessed to be your pastor.

My pastor is also not rich.

I chuckle at this because our pastor not that long ago got a comment because a cop came by and asked if a car in the church parking lot was abandoned.  It of course was our pastor's. :)

Now granted there was an issue with it at the time and it wasn't normally in the shape it was in, but he got a huge kick out of that.

Oh and shortly after that he may have been shopping in his underwear (I'm not going to guess on that) and bought a $6000 197x something Pinto on Ebay.  It's actually a kit car, but we give him a hard time about buying a Pinto to begin with. ;)

Norm, now that you mention it, I guess nowadays many people shop in their underwear... eBay!

Thanks Mark, we are the ones who are blessed....(I know you won't let it get to your head, either!)

Pastor Aminata, you absolutely made my day yesterday! That was a wonderful post of yours, and you were too kind to me. Thanks!

Voice, you make some excellent points concerning $$, a very touchy subject for some. Thank you for your wisdom.

Ragland, "good, uncorrupt, humble guys" ... like Moses, the guy who stuttered, after 40 years? I agree. There are few things as discouraging as arrogance in the pulpit. But thankfully, that's not nearly as common as some would make it out to be!

Dr (pastor) Thomas, I deeply appreciate your comment, and your desire to bless your flock (and the rest of us) with your FOFs. Thanks!!

To other friends who have commented, particularly to share about your own pastors, THANK YOU! It is good to appreciate the Lord's provision for our spiritual wellbeing! Even pastors who we would consider "faulty" deserve our respect and prayerful concern.

Great blog, excellant topic, and of course well written.  Finding a good church with a pastor who loves and serves is a gift from God!  Pastoring is a tough job and we should each take the time and make the effort to support the pastor God has placed over us.
Thanks for the reminder Mike.

There are indeed a few pastors in the Body of Christ who are like this model pastor.  I was under the leadership of my pastor in the initial days of my salvation.  He was a wonderful man of God with an apostolic vision.  He was very simple and humble.  He had not hankered after popularity in the Christian world.  He was not for money.  The Lord called him home during 1981.  When he died, he had no own home to live.  Even today his wife and grown up children live in a rented house in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.  At the time of his death, he was in America.  When he was aware of his home-call through a vision given to him by God, he asked the people of God in America who had gathered money for a surgery on his failing kidneys not to spend the same on his medical treatment. He refused to accept this money for his medical treatment.  He told them, "You send this money for God's work in India.  I am going to be with Jesus".  When he died, his wife had no money to bring his body from America.  But a popular servant of God in Tamil Nadu, Dr.DGS Dhinakaran arranged to bring his body from America to Chennai.  His life was a life of total dedication.  His name is Gladys Easwararaj.  He loved the sheep in his church with true love.  He ministered to the poor saints in the church.  He used to encourage his co-workers in the church to give messages.  He was willing to sacrifice his pulpit for others.  These days, we find that the pastors sacrifice everything except their pulpits.

There are still servants of God like these model pastors.  We have to thank God for them.

Glenn, wonderful to hear from ya, thank you much! Yes I couldn't agree more, landing in a good local church is truly a gift from above!

Brian, great to hear from you! How come your church members haven't come to this blog yet to give you praise and thanks? :-)  (I'm sure they'll find their way here eventually. lol) We (well, I) would probably not mind coming to SD. I'll bet it's quiet and the traffic light!

Job, that's a beautiful account of a sincere man of God. I'm sure folks who lump men like him into their venomous attacks on the church have a special punishment awaiting them at judgment -- though I do not take pleasure in saying that at all!

Well, I think my pastor is famous and fabulous!  No doubt about it!  I am his wife, so I should know. lol lol

Your pastor must be feeling pretty good after reading this blog.  It is always good for a pastor to know they are touching the life of those God is allowing them to lead.  I too believe there are many “good” pastors in our midst.  You know what?  I believe in the institution and I believe in the office of the pastor with all my heart. Why?  Because is Biblical! (Eph 4:11)  I came to God through a pastor in a church service, I was baptized by a pastor, my children were presented to God by a pastor, I married my husband with the blessing of a pastor, and last but not least, I am married to one. Yes, I am very happy we have pastors.

I think they are awesome individuals, but like you and I, they are also human and they make mistakes.  But the awesome thing about it is that God forgives and restores.  Think about Aaron!!!  He made an idol for the people of Israel and made the people fall into idolatry, and he was the “high priest.”  Did God forgive him?  Yes!  Did God restore him?  Yes!

Let’s honor our pastors.  There are good ones and restored ones out there ;-)

Ok folks, now I know Laura is signing onto this account, I had no idea about the last few comments. (meaning...she is a silent reader)

Pat, yes, spandex bad! lol And Cathy, we'll count on you for fashion advice! :-)

Lourdes, I always love your comments, very insightful(!!) and full of your heart! Dr W strikes me as cut out of the exact same mold as my pastor(s). The humility, care n concern, zeal all apparently present. May God bless you guys and your ministry!!

Yeah, we do have to be very careful what we say against any pastor of any sort.  Really, even what we say against our brothers and sisters.  We are suppose to be known by our love for each other.  My pastors (married couple) are the same; live modestly; drove their car til it croaked. Live in a nice but not extravagant bungalow.  Dress like everyone else.  They preach the prosperity teaching, but NOT for personal gain.  They teach that God wants to have vessels that will distribute HIS money for HIM, not hoard it for ourselves. Now I have been very vocal about standing up for the televangelists. It isn't that I am saying I am in total agreement; it is giving the benefit of the doubt, as I hope people would do for me if I were accussed of anything.  Make sense?  I want mercy shown to me too.  Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it.

Great blog!  It is really important to take the time to get to know your pastor.  My husband and I are truly blessed to be involved in a church where the entire staff of pastors are people who make you proud.  One use to be a professional baseball player, but gave it up to answer God's call.

I strongly encourage everyone to take the time to give a word of encouragement to your own pastors.  They are, aftereall, people too.  A fact that too many people forget.

Thank you Dena, great to hear from you! Wow, gave up baseball to be a pastor? Sounds like a serious change in lifestyle there. Slightly lower standard of living as a pastor, I would imagine. Good words of encouragement Dena.

Lara, your pastors sound very humble, very down to earth. Like most, I would imagine. All of the pastors I've known have been very anti-celebrity minded. Let's at least give pastors the benefit of the doubt, contrary to some, the character flaws of some high profile church leaders are not shared by all the others!

Aren't we so blessed when God leads us to His servants who can best teach us at that point in our lives?  I, too, have a lot of respect for the everyday pastors, as those are the men & women who have helped me grow as a Christian along my journey.  But I firmly believe that God calls different people for different purposes....some are made to proclaim the Word in the spotlight, others are made to serve in smaller circles.  As my own pastor says, God created life and He alone gets to define it.  Though we may not understand our Lord's reasoning, but He always has a plan for those He has chosen.  I am not in any way undermining your point, because it is heartbreaking to hear about people taking advantage of their gifts.

As for your points about preaching about money, I do want to disagree...slightly.   There is a HUGE difference between preaching & teaching about tithing and asking for money.  Our tithe is giving to God and the church what is rightly His, in order for Him to provide us with what we need.  While it is saddening to see a man or woman of God take advantage of their position for personal gain, I have heard several pastors preach about tithing and their point was always to teach people how to follow God's commands and trust in Him that He will always provide, no matter what.  Tithing is important, it is God's law, and all people, including Christian, need to be reminded of that so that they can serve God in ALL areas of their life.  I only wish some people who think churches are just after money could hear one of the messages I have....
