Chess: A game of skill played by two persons on a checkered board (a chess’ board) divided into 64 squares, with 16 pieces on each side. The aim of each player, proceeding by alternate moves, is to checkmate his opponent’s king.
This definition gives us the object of the game called chess.
It is an interesting game that my father taught my brothers and me to play as children, he would often tell us that the game would cause us to think strategically.
It wasn’t until many years and being beat by him that I realized it did teach you to think strategically. If I was to ever win a game I would have to not only think like that, but I would also have to out- wit my opponent.
Lately I’ve been seeing how born again believers and those in ministry do ministry like the game of Chess.
The Bible tells us in Romans:
12:4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 12:5 So we, [being] many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
As I read the word of God and see passages of Scripture like the one above ,it seems to describe unity or oneness!
As I listen to believers and those in ministry I see a lot of the opposite.
It is in my understanding that the Christian relationship is based on team work , they are called on to swarm like insects working together strategically to reach a common goal.
It seems that many of believers have come to a point in life that they want to be defenders of the king by out- witting and out strategizing the opponent.
All this well and good ,but the sad part is that many of us don’t realize who the opponent is.
You may be thinking that this is off base of the topic, however if you notice in the game of Chess there are only two players ,and anytime you play or watch a game with two players there is but one winner trying to reach his or her own goal, defending there own honor, Title ,or kingdom.
So please allow me to share with you on how to understand the game of chess from the eyes of ministry.
We must first understand that (ministry) is not a game .
(It is however the breath of life to someone who is lost).
The king needs no protection!
(only subjection) his word is the first and final word.
The opponent is (Satan) who comes to kill, steel, and destroy the believer.
The Christians are those who work together as one ,in an effort to keep these things from happening .
Christians are to strategically pin- point the need , and than allow the
(Holy Spirit) to direct them on how to see to that need.
You and I who are in ministry are called to be Servants of the most high God, we are to do the work of an Evangelist and see to the needs of those one’s who are lost and without hope.
No longer can we do ministry with selfish actions , with the intent of making a name for ourselves , by out -witting ,out Strategizing or defeating each other , as if this was the game called Chess!
