Seeking to be Dissatisfied Jeremy sighed as he heard his wife, Aidan, getting their two boys up to go to church. Another Sunday. Another church service. With a loud groan, Jeremy mustered up all the effort he could manage and slowly sat up in bed as he gathered his thoughts for the day. "Honey, come on - we have to leave in thirty minutes!" Aidan's cheery voice broke into his reverie. "I'm coming, I'm coming," he muttered. As Jeremy shuffled through his closet, he began talking to God in a conversational tone. "It's not that I don't believe in you or love you...it's just gotten to be so routine. Everything's the same day after day, and I'm just so frustrated with the monotony of it all!" Jeremy thought back to when he and Aidan had first come to the fullness of the knowledge of Christ five years earlier. He remembered the excitement and passion he'd initially felt for Jesus in the beginning. It had been such a euphoric feeling, and he recalled the hours spent each day in prayer and devotion, yearning for more and more of God. He continued aloud, "What happened, Lord? When did I start settling for 'just good enough?' " At that moment, Jeremy heard Aidan praying across the hall in the family prayer room. As he listened to the intensity of her heart crying out to God, tears began to well up in his eyes, and he felt that old familiar longing rise up in his heart. As the tears started to trickle down his cheeks, the words came tumbling out of his mouth, "God, I just want more of You. I want all that you have for me. I know that your plan for my life is perfect, and your strength perfects me in my weakness. Would you bring me back to a place of surrender? Cause me to desire you again above everything else on earth." That morning, as He poured out his heart to Jesus, Jeremy discovered a renewed sense of yearning for God. Do you find yourself becoming complacent in your relationship with God? Have you settled into a comfortable routine with Jesus so that He fits conveniently into your schedule and never disrupts your daily life? We were created to seek the Lord and worship Him, ever yearning for more and more of Him. If you are bored or content with staying in the same place with Christ, it's time to be shaken. Begin this week by seeking God more fervently in your prayer time. Ask Him to sharpen your desire for Him and increase your hunger for the things of the spirit while simultaneously diminishing your hunger for the things of the flesh. Watch your life begin to change as a result! |
