33:3 Sing unto him a new song; Play skilfully with a loud noise. I love this verse. It could be my "life verse" or some such. But I sure do live by it. This will not be the only time I do this, but I will try to make it as painless as possible. Look we really need musicians to help with services at the Rescue Mission. Due to our drummer being temporarily unavailable, we need this filled the most. But we can also use any musician who plays a instrument, and can read a lead sheet. If you can help at all, please call the mission @ (702)-382-1766, and ask for Brandon, or send me a message.
3:9 For then will I turn to the peoples of a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of Jehovah, to serve him with one consent.
Since I'm on this music subject, let me continue.
I am an avid musician, and a christian. As such I have noticed that the music scene in general is in a poor state. Just look at the Billboard top 100 if you don't believe. No really, take a look. Forget the fact that they aren't christian. They don't even have good morals. And this is what kids in America are listening to. At the time of this writing, the #1 single is "Kiss, Kiss", by Chris Brown feat. T-pain. Its a very provocative song that glorifies sex with a "anyone you can get your hands on attitude". Not to mention the video!
101:3 I will set no base thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; It shall not cleave unto me.
But I'm not here to bash the top selling single in America among young adults (in all demographics). But rather to bring up a point:
We need good music!
At this point, I'm not sure if I care what genre it falls under, or even if its worship music. But we need music in this world that doesn't ruin peoples minds. And if you think that teenagers are the only ones affected by bad music, you haven't been to many of the clubs in Vegas, with a bunch of grown adults who should know better. Sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll only touch the tip of the iceberg.
15:33Be not deceived: Evil companionship's corrupt good morals. So what to do? Well here's some good tips:
1. Listen only to worship music. Not a bad Idea, however you may be hard pressed to find some that fits your musical taste, especially if you have listened to secular music most of your life.
2. Listen to "Christian Contemporary". This is a genre recognized by the music industry as: "Music that appeals to self-identified fans of contemporary Christian music on account of a perceived connection to what they regard as Christianity" (Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music (2002) definition). The problem with this is that not all of it is "worship" music. While people who like secular music this a good way to go, but still be on guard.
4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life.
3. Now as a musician, I am going to speak to other musicians who might read this. If God gave you the talents to use, use them for him! I would encourage you to get into a worship team, or start a worship group, or play hymns on the street corner, and pray for passersby. Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God!
I understand that some of you may not be comfortable being so openly "christian" in your music, especially if your just starting a regular group. Well in that case, get together with people who are comfortable with it. Or if you don't do that, make your music uplifting, and have lyrics that include good points of thought. Want a list?
4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
A good list if I do say so myself! Anything less than the aforementioned would be aiding the enemy. Finally, if you happen to be one of those enterprising musicians that wants to reach out to those who would not be likely to hear your new single on their local Contemporary Christian station; follow the same advice found in Philippians. If nothing else make sure that you're music has a good moral and virtuous nature.
Well, I think I have exhausted what little knowledge I have for the night.
And just in case your not into Contemporary Christian, here are some good recommendations:
