Day 14 Category: Religion and Philosophy Day 14, a milestone. It has now been two weeks. I hope everyone is as excited as I am . The reading for day 14 was Deuteronomy 8:1-23:25. If I could give you a theme for the book of Deuteronomy, I think it would be remembrance. Someone please give me a count on how many times God says to "remember" or "do not forget". Could someone please get that count for me, thank you. Oh and a cappucino too. So far this book of the Old Testament has been a history lesson for those who survived the desert. Now it has become a retelling of the Law. This fits well with the theme of rememberance that has permeated the book of Deuteronomy. We would do well today to always be remembering what God has done for us. Remembering here seems to be an active thing, not passive like we usually approach these sort of things. We tend to just try to pull things out of our memory instead of always setting something before our eyes (perhaps figuritively) that will keep it in our mind at all times. He says in chapter 11 verse 2 "Remember today that your children were not the ones who saw and experienced the discipline of the Lord your God: his majesty, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm...5 It was not your children who saw what he did for you in the desert until you arrived at this place...18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up..." The purpose of our remembering is to teach our children how to remember. Chapter 10 speaks of fearing God and in verses 20 and 21 it says "Fear the Lord your God and serve Him. Hold fast to Him and take your oaths in His name. He is your praise; He is your God, who performed for you those great and awesome wonders you saw with your own eyes." Christians don't do enough of what God tells the Israelites to do in chapter 15. For further reading please see Isaiah chapter 58, particularly verses 6-14. Let me know what you think. |
