Day 15 Current mood: peaceful Category: Religion and Philosophy The reading for day 15 was Deuteronomy 24:1-34:12. There is a strong empahsis in Deuteronomy on rememberance, espeically of the covenant. We see again in Deuteronomy the blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience, and the people are told repeatedly to remember everything that God has done for them, the covenant He made with them, and their acceptance of the covenant as binding on their lives. There are a few verses I would like to point out. Verses 14 and 15 of chapter 29 say "I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God but also with those who are not here today." Who is he referring to when he says "those who are not here today"? I think he answers that question in chapter 30 verse 6; "The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live"(emphasis mine), The covenant was for those present and their descendants. Does this sort of arrangement exist in the new covenant? Let me know what you think . Another good couple of verses to go along wiith this are found in chapter 30 verses 19 and 20 "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob"(emphasis is mine again). A good book on the subject of covenants is God of Promise by Michael Horton. If you don't read any other part of Deuteronomy, read chapters 32 and 33. It won't take you long. I think it is a beautiful, terrifying picture of the warrior God who wounds and heals us. "See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand." Deuteronomy 32:39. Amen.
