Day 16 Current mood: sleepy Category: Religion and Philosophy The reading for day 16 was Joshua 1:1-14:15. The first couple of chapters deal with coming into the promised land. In these first couple of chapters God repeatedly says "be strong and courageous." Why do you think that God does that? I don't know about you, but I've always pictured Joshua as a young guy when he begins leading the people. He wasn't. He had to have been at least 60 years old when Moses died. Can you imagine a 60 year old man leading an army into battle. You know that God was fighting for them .That is just another way that God showed the people that they weren't to rely on their own strength, but his strength instead. God uses a prostitute to protect spies. When the people crossed the Jordan the water all piled up upstream at a town...I wonder what happened to that town? The walls of Jericho came down with a shout...at LSU, during a football game, the fans yelled so loud that it measured as a small earthquake on the campus...there were a lot more Israelites than fans . When Achan sins, the whole community is punished until he pays for his sin. That flies in the face of our since of fairness and indivduality. So far Joshua has been a very bloody book. I once heard a preacher say that God is love, but God is never love at the expense of his holiness. What do you think of that? |
