 | Day 17 Category: Religion and Philosophy The reading for day 17 was Joshua 15:1-Judges 3:31. The second half of Joshua is pretty much just dividing up the land among the Israelites. In chapter 24 there is a recounting of the history and a renewal of the covenant. Verse 13 shows the kindness of God towards them "So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant." They didn't get anything on their own, it was given to them by God. Judges starts off with more fighting (argh!), but in chapter 1 it begins to tell of the people failing to drive out the inhabitants of the land. By chapter 2 the people have completely forsaken God, what happened? Joshua 24:19,20 says "Joshua said to the people, 'you ar not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.' " The people forgot to teach their children how to remember (see verse 10 of Judges chapter 2). In chapter 3 we see the first judges that God raises up because he had compassion on his people. I think the scariest guy in chapter 3 has got to be Shamgar. Anyone who can kill 600 men at one time with an oxgoad is one scary guy..."He too saved Israel." I like that, its like oh by the way, he did it too . I'm done now. |
