| The Paralyzed Country (A taste of Bolivia part 3) |

| Those were the headlines on the news tonight in Bolivia. What country was paralyzed? Ours. Today the 'country' was on strike...there is no diesel, there is no meat, the senators are mad at the president, inflation is causing havok. So how do they deal with their problems...they go on strike and blockade the roads with buses and cars. If people want to get past the blockade, they risk getting their tires popped or window bashed in. In downtown Cochabamba, the streets were filled with angry woman banging their empty kettles with metal spoons in protest of the inflation of prices. EVERYTHING has gone up in price. The 'well to do' are not affected as we can stock up with food. But what about those who buy their little piece of meat and potatoes each day? They are the ones who are suffering. They barely can make it from one day to the next and now with the inflation, they are not able to feed their hungry family and survive. It makes the cycle of poverty even worse as the depression feeds on them, they turn to alcohol and prostitution. Young children, the severely handicapped as well as the elderly are sent to the streets to beg for money. When will this cycle end? Does causing the country to be paralyzed for a day really reap with benefits? Driving down the street can cause your heart to wrench when you see so much destitution...and what difference can I make? Can I make a difference? Lord, help us to show your HOPE to these hopeless people.... |
