| IT'S THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD...not my problem! |
|
| |
Let's go north a little from India to Bangladesh. The government has allowed logging companies and mining companies to inflict deforrestation on the Himalayan mountains, so that instead of retaining the water from the monsoons, tons of topsoil needed for maintenance of the environment wash into the rivers which overflow and wipe out a million people every year. Last week there was also a cyclone that caused a sunami that killed 1,723 people. These people are Muslims. They don't have Jesus and they are very hostile to Christians. SO WHY SHOULD WE CARE?! AFTER ALL THEY ARE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD. Unless they are briefly on the news for some disaster or send some terrorists over here to "destroy the infidel" we don't give them a moment's thought. At least I didn't until recently.
Why am I thinking of them now? The world's too big to pray for EVERYBODY. You have to get specific for specific answers to be evident. Why take the time to pray and ask God to send help to this particular stricken, suffering nation? Why ask that He might send some evangelists in to tell them of Jesus's love while helping to build shelters and share food with those wiped out by this big wind and tidal wave?. Because they are a stone's throw from my Indian families. (yes, I now have two precious families to love: Siani and Suphala Harpa of Orissa with the New Life Power Gospel Fellowship Ministries and Job and Alvina Anbalagan with their internet Bible school teaching and biographies of modern saints & Christian fiction Ministries.)
Recently I was able to write three little stories about Jesus for teaching the ONE HALF BILLION jobless, illiterate people in their country to read (and half of all the women in India can't either).
I was patting myself on the back for having started to get them translated into Oriya and Hindi from the English. That ought to do the trick. Just let everyone learn how to read English and the problem of illiteracy is solved. I might just go over there for a month and teach a class myself!
Then I ran into a little problem. You see, there are 29 states in India and they are like 29 totally separate, different countries with different languages, customs, religions, scripts... No, it's actually worse than that...each state has regions within them that ALSO have regions that also have totally different cultures, languages etc.
If they are illiterate, they aren't going to probably WANT to learn English or Hindi. Too much trouble, and they have the Koran or the Hindu Scriptures, or the Buddhist ones. Why would they want another unfamiliar scripture? Why, their famililies would disown them!
It all comes down to a place ONE THIRD the size of the United States with over four times the number of people we have. Only half the people have actual jobs and income...most people are under the age of 30). But suppose you wanted to send them a Bible in their language? (The cost is $2.50 in Andhra Pradesh www.agwaindia.org and $3.00 in Orissa www.newlifeorissa.org). Chances are, they don't need to read or speak the two NATIONAL LANGUAGES of Hindi or English. They probably don't even want to speak their STATE language or maybe even their REGIONAL language...all they understand is their mother tongue and there's no alphabet or script for it. So what do we do, throw up our hands in despair and say "FORGET THEM"??? That is what the Devil would LOVE for us to do, especially since he made sure they ALSO are all fervently involved in 19 major religions (all false except for the one with Jesus, the only guaranteed Savior from sin) He's laughing with glee, thinking India is pretty much imune from Christianity.
Remember, Jesus expects there to be people FROM EVERY TONGUE to be citizens of heaven before he returns! Something has to be done to help get this job done...or he won't return for a long, long time!
"After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, FROM EVERY NATION, RACE, PEOPLE AND TONGUE. And they stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb." Rev. 7:9-10 "They sang a new hymn: Worthy are you to receive the scroll and to break open its seals, for you were slain and with your blood you purchased for God THOSE FROM EVERY TRIBE AND TONGUE, PEOPLE AND NATION." Rev. 5:9
Well, there are people who are out there down in the trenches...where there are no toilets, electricity, clean water or much food. They work unnoticed, unpraised and practically unsupported, to BRING IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD, preaching and putting the precious Words of Life in the mother tongues of people SO THEY WILL UNDERSTAND the Good News of salvation through Jesus. If you want to, you can write to two of them (Deva and Sudha Subir at<lifegivingword@gmail.com > Most barefoot Indian evangelists (34 in Andhra Pradesh, 45 in Orissa) can manage to live on $30 a month support if they occasionally go without food 2 days now and then. They don't even have that much support at times. How would you like your family to try to survive on that little?
Well, you don't have to pick India. (Actually, in my case, God picked India and surgically inserted into my heart, sewing it shut again. It's always with me...like a tatoo.) But you ought to get your heart specifically involved with some evangelists somewhere in the world...even if it's just to pray. |
