I'm not much for this blogging thing. Mainly because I often can't think to say the right things so, how am I going to write down something right. But, oh well.
On Sunday, Carlos and I went to Atlanta to work after the Tornado there on Friday night. It actually began on Saturday morning when we were asked to come down. In the process of getting stocked up and ready to roll, bad weather moved through Gainesville and we hung around just in case we had to respond here. Later in the day, we were told to come down to Atlanta on Sunday to work for the day.
We arrived at the Red Sheild Lodge about 6:30 Sunday morning to load up and head out to serve. First thing, the PR staff had the 11Alive News crew filming us and interviewing me. We finally head out to the EOC to serve and then to our location for the day about 8:30.
Nothing overly exciting or different about this deployment other than the good reminder of who God is. For my money, the storm Friday night may not have been a tornado that touched the ground, but still a tornado. It's amazing at how we have to be reminded sometime how God has control over the weather after this weekend and here I sit with it sunny and 65 degrees.
Also, a good reminder of who God is comes in other people through a disaster. We served a crew of seasoned workers from the Cobb County DOT on Sunday and these guys could not have been more grateful for us being there for them. We served people who no doubt had not lost their homes, but in fact had no homes. We served people who perhaps damage to their homes but were ok.
Through it all, I am reminded of who God is and what God expects from us. You see, I can serve from a canteen and know that when someone asks for 2 or 3 plates, they probably are all for themselves. I can serve from a canteen and be frustrated because things might not go as I hope they would. I can also serve from a canteen and smile when someone says they appreciate us. It's through all these things I am reminded of who God is and what He expects.
God does not expect me to decide how things should be or who people should be, only to serve as He reminds me to serve in Matthew 25:35 "for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me."
Our acts shouldn't depend on wealth, or ability, or intelligence, they should only depend on grace. Because "freely we have been given, freely we should give." Jesus expects our personal involvement in ministry and in meeting the needs of others. Are we doing as we should?
Blessings!
