(((((FILLING THE VOID))))) (((THE HOLE IN OUR HEARTS))) Hang on to your hats; I feel a heretical question coming on. There's much talk in Christian circles about the hole we have in our hearts when we're born and the way God fills that void when we trust Him for our salvation. I believe Augustine popularized this theory. I don't believe it. Mine's still there. Does God ever promise to fill it? If He does, then it's one that He has to fill every day -- sometimes more often than that. When we are hurt, when we are lonely, when we are scared, we run to Him. Sometimes, we feel His presence. Sometimes nothing. But faith keeps us running back, tells us that ultimately He is the one to fill the hole, the longing. So we keep coming. And He keeps filling it up. And we spill it, or drink it, or it flows right out of the big crack in the bottom of our cups. But He keeps right on pouring. David Wilcox uses that imagery in a song on his album Big Horizon. The song talks about how, as lovers, it's impossible to fill each other up -- we have to go to the source of love, and each be filled there: "Because you cannot make me happy not when I'm empty inside of me But you can pull yourself right in here with me My misery'd love to have your company We cannot trade empty for empty, we must go to the Waterfall for there's a break in the cup That holds love inside us all"[ ] One of the reasons we're especially prone to jealousy as single women is that we sense a void in our lives, and believe that a husband would fill what God hasn't already.
