The average income of the poorest one-fifth of D.C. residents rose only 3% from the 1980's compared to an 81% rise for the wealthiest one-fifth. 3%.....81% This gap is wider than in every other major U.S. city, except for Atlanta. This occurred during the recent "economic boom" in D.C., where the real estate and job market have been thriving. Black residents in particular have been left behind, with unemployment levels close to their lowest levels in 30 years. The nation's capital can and must do better if we are to truly be a country that represents all the people.
