I've been married to Shirley for just over five years, and between us, we have six children (April, Danny, Amanda, Amy, Allison, Jason) and two grandchildren (Elise and Mikayla) - and don't try this at home.
No one has any idea what I do for a living, although MikeS comes closest to guessing. It is legal. It involves international travel, including (so far this year) Shanghai/Nanjing, Prague, and Hong Kong/Shenzhen. When I can, I attend church when I'm traveling. God shows up there, too.
China requires a visa for Americans to enter the country, and I qualify for a multiple-entry visa. I'm not usually platinum on American, but I've been gold (at least 50,000 miles annually) for more than 10 years.
I've been a Christian all my life, and a United Methodist for about twenty years (all at First United Methodist Church of Allen). I am, of course, still figuring out what being a Christian, and being a United Methodist, actually means.
I'm a certified lay speaker in the North Texas Conference/Dallas Northeast District and have been volunteered to coordinate lay speakers in my congregation this year.
I'm a Lay Advisory Board member at Perkins School of Theology.
I'll study the Bible with pretty much anyone. I'm currently leading "ReClaiming Scripture", an adult Sunday school class, and Shirley and I will be co-leading a Disciple Short-term study on John. It's looking like I'll be helping with junior high Bible study this year, too.
| InterestsI cannot believe they don't have a place to keep a list of percussion instruments with pictures ... but here goes.
Doumbek, Ashiko, djembe, tubano, congas, bongos, and random percussion toys (tambourines, shakers, etc), roughly in that order. Usually, Daisy Miller has most of my drums with the percussion choirs, so it's not as bad as it sounds. Oh, THAT was a pun...
found this animated layout at HOTFreeLayouts.com | MoviesI rarely, if ever, pick a movie, so my movie list tells you more about the people I see movies with, than about me.
Prety much any movie on my list has a story, too. In "Knocked Up", they pick the perfect OB/GYN, go through the pregnancy, and when they call to say "meet you at the hospital", the OB/GYN is at a bar mitzvah in San Francisco. I saw this movie with Danny and Sarah, and when they arrived at the hospital, their OB/GYN was in San Francisco ...
"No Reservations" was fun, but it's not on the search list yet. | MusicMy music list isn't easy to post...
Pretty much anything the youth band plays, no matter who wrote it.
I still listen, a lot, to Five Iron Frenzy and to the Supertones, but neither band is still recording.
Disciple, Barlow Girls, and Superchick, not in that order - I've seen all of them in concert and would love to see all of them again.
| BooksYeah, they're pretty much all Bibles. These are the ones I'm most likely to have in my backpack, but I also read others. I'll be reading "The Learning Bible" in Disciple this year.
I spend as much time reading ABOUT the Bible as I spend reading the Bible. "The Book: A History of the Bible" is one of my favorites, but there are many good ones.
My father reads hostory voraciously and hands me pretty much everything he finishes. "The Myth of the Great War" is very good - I just finished it - but there's no way I could keep up.
"Lies my teacher told me" was spectacular (birthday present from Amy). Do not read it until you graduate from high school. Wink, wink. |

Thanks for the encouragement on my blog. Pete did remember 4th grade SS when I reminded him of laying on the floor and eating a Seder meal. They all remember the stuff I made from raisins that looked gross but tasted good, but not that I used a doggie chew bone for the bone! What a great age! See ya at the retreat...I have the coolest tattoos! Rita
