I'm the eldest daughter of Jim & Betty Souther and started attending Osborne Neighborhood Church in 1956. My siblings: John (he died in February 1971 while serving in Vietnam), Bruce (he’s married to Susan Thatcher), Ron, Debbie (she’s married to Darla Severn’s son, Greg) and Diane. My father died in 1979 and my mom remarried to another long-time Osbornite, Gene Thatcher (father of Beverly, Kathy, Susan & Lorna) in 1981; Gene's first wife, Ruth, passed away shortly after my father died. My brother, Bruce, had married Susan Thatcher several years before our parent's remarried, making Bruce & Susan both step-brother and step-sister, as well as aunts and uncles to their own children; but I'll stop there because it gets too confusing!!! Gene and my mom moved to Mariposa, CA in 1985 where my mom still resides; Gene passed away in 1999. If you stay at ONC long enough you can see how we all become one big family!!
I was privileged to be taught the things of the Lord by some very wise people: Pastor Jack Stiles (my pastor for 45 years), Pattie Stiles (my Teen Choir Director) and Ed Stewart (my Youth Pastor). Rhoda Ott was my second grade Sunday School teacher who helped me accept Jesus into my heart at age 7 and Virginia Kline, my seventh grade Sunday School teacher, lead me to the infilling of the Holy Spirit. At age 13 Pastor Stiles baptized me. Some of my other Sunday School teachers during my "growing up years" were Dorie Hurst (my future mother-in-law), Ruth Thatcher, Myrna Hurst (our favorite aunt) and Joe Cooper. Rick’s dad, Bob Hurst, was also a Sunday School teacher during those years. Larry Basnett was our Sunday School teacher during our earlier years of marriage and I can't fail to mention one of our favorite Osbornites, Mary Hughes, the Burton Hunter of years ago, who was involved in just about everything.
During the summer of 1966, while at Kings Canyon Sr. High camp, I met Rick Hurst, the young man who God would have me fall in love with and marry 4 years later. Rick is the second eldest son of Bob & Doris Hurst’s 7 children, the ones who took up a whole pew in early church for many years during the mid 1950’s – 1969. Pastor Stiles performed our wedding ceremony at Osborne in August 1970 and we recently celebrated our 37th year of marriage. A few years later, in November 1973, we were blessed with our only child, James Robert Hurst, who was named after both of our fathers. Pastor Stiles dedicated Jimmy in December 1973 and I remember Pastor Stiles saying, “I hold in my arms little Jim-Bob Hurst” (that was during the time the Walton’s aired on TV) and I was horrified at the thought our son was going to forever be nicknamed Jim-Bob. Praise God that did not happen!!!!
Jim married his wife, Rachel, in 2000 and a year later we welcomed our first grandchild, Caleb James Hurst in March 2001. Our granddaughter, Marlee AnnaMarie Hurst, arrived in February 2004. Jim and family live in Wofford Heights, CA (near the Kernville/Lake Isabella) and are members of a wonderful Four Square church there called Family Life Center. Caleb & Marlee's godparents are Jason & Laura Jones.
We are also privileged to be godparents to Whitney Diane Jones who was born in June 1999. Whitney is the youngest daughter of Jason & Laura Jones.
Rick and I still attend Osborne Neighborhood Church and Pastor Stan Taylor has been our pastor since Pastor Stiles' retirement in 1990. |
