| Major Dalton Cunningham was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, the youngest of five children. In June of 1971 Major Cunningham married the former Wanda (Casey) Ammons. Together they entered the College for Officer Training in 1972 as members of the “Followers of Christ” Session. Lieutenants Cunningham were appointed to the Charlotte, North Carolina, Belmont Corps in 1974 where they opened a community center that is still vital and active today. Majors Cunningham served in three Corps – Charlotte, North Carolina, Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Florence, Alabama before being appointed to Divisional Headquarters in the Maryland/West Virginia Division as Divisional Youth Secretaries. In 1987 they were appointed as Divisional Youth Secretaries in the Texas Division. Following Texas they were appointed to the Georgia Divisional Headquarters staff where they served for two years. In 1992 Majors Cunningham were appointed Area Commander and Coordinator of Women’s Activities for Orlando, Florida. Major Cunningham was appointed as a delegate to the International College for Officers in January 1997. Majors Cunningham returned to the Georgia Divisional Headquarters in June 1997 as Metro Atlanta Area Commander and General Secretary and Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries. In July 2000 Majors Cunningham were appointed as Divisional Commanders of the Georgia Division. June 2004, Majors Cunningham were appointed Divisional Commanders of the Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi Division where they led The Salvation Army’s response to Hurricane Katrina’s devastation in 2005 and 2006. In October 2006, Majors Cunningham were appointed to The Southern Territorial Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia where they currently serve as the Territorial Ambassadors for the Mission. Major Cunningham completed the degree of Master of Theological Studies at Gordon-Conwell Seminary in May, 2007. Majors Cunningham have two married children who with their spouses are in Salvation Army ministry. Joy Mikles is the College Ministry Director for The Salvation Army Southern Territory and Matthew Cunningham is enrolled in the Evangeline Booth College where he and his wife Danielle are due to be commissioned as Officers in June of 2008. The Cunningham’s are the proud grandparents of Ella Cunningham and Justice Mikles. |
