Community sensitization about caring for and fostering orphans is one of the major activities that GIDCO -Uganda' is involved in. Today, much of Uganda remains undeveloped. Its populace is ravaged by civil Wars, Hunger and the AIDS epidemic that continues its foray into every village. Currently, 80% of the overall Population of Uganda is YOUTH. Of the 80%,39% are orphans, and 41% are either HIV+, or have developed AIDS! GIDCCO-Uganda ,seek to bring hope and future to this generation of parentless children. MISSION: To bring glory to God by providing better living conditions and good education in a Christian Environment to orphans. To uphold the sanctity of human life by ^meeting the Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual needs of orphaned children, street kids and where possible Widows whose husbands have died of HIV/AIDS and really need the orphans to continue with School yet can't afford it. To Bring Medical care and some needed basic needs into the Homes of those who are already ridden with AIDS and don't have any help. In order to help HIV/AIDS widows with something that will last, GIDCCO-Uganda has designed a program where they are trained in making African Art and Crafts for sale. These art and crafts range from Baskets, Straw mats, Table mats, Place mats. coasters... hi a free spirit of inquiry, and drawing from a rich resource of years of married life and or perhaps parenting experience, parents who are mature in the knowledge of God, His creation and His ways and are willing to adopt a Child will have a Child re-located to their home and will be responsible for training/guiding this/these Child(ren) for their part at home. In executing this Mission, We are embracing the Scripture in psalms 68:5 - 6, which says " A Father to the fatherless, and a Judge for the widows is God in His Holly habitation. God makes a home for the lonely. He leads out prisoners into Prosperity" and (mark 10:13-14) THE PLAN Orphans After Identifying the orphans that are in great need and require immediate action, the administration of AIDS GIDCCO - Uganda, seeks to know the immediate relatives that are still living; it can be an Uncle, an Aunt, a Cousin... then finds out what this relative thinks is best for the child before a decision is taken. Together with the relative's input and taking in consideration the child's preference, we decide whether this child should go back to Formal education (which is normally the case with younger children and teenagers who were in school at the time of the death of the parents) or Vocational Training for Older young men and women who after talking it through with the administration of this program still think they want Vocational training. VOCATIONAL TRAINING: Computing We decided to start with Computer training because during our research evaluation we found that many companies and businesses wanted to employ young people that had computer knowledge. Most employers said they didn't have time to train on job because it is not cost effective. For so long, people in this community have had to travel as many as 60kms to the capital city to have small services done for them for lack of skilled people in this community. Document bureaus and many other places can only employ someone that has a skill that is relevant to the job. Precisely, sure employment was the reason we decided to begin with Computing. With some help that came in as a donation, we were able to buy a few used computers, (2s) and were able to start. We also foundout that - 'The best computer training we can give these youngsters is the kind where they can learn different Computer Skills that are relevant, and can easily be used around this area, but ofcourse with a National and to some extent international standard. (Skills relevant here, but can also be used else where). Who Should come and what is the Cost? How does the Future look like? The programs cater for children from all academic backgrounds, abilities, races, tribes, languages and beliefs and are orphans or Widows as a result of HIV/AIDS. Classes are open from Monday to Friday, 9.00 am - 5.00 p.m. All classes are given FREE to all orphans and Widows to help them after completion acquire a skill which will help them get a Job. As for those from the community that are not orphans or widows and want to under go the training, GIDCCO requires that they pay a small amount of money as fees (which is literally affordable by anyone compared to what other training institutions require) which money goes into the pocket of GIDCCO- Uganda to help with other needs of the program as related to children and widows or HIV/AIDS patients.' Widows We realized that in this area, there were many widows, and many of them were REALLY struggling with their families. One particular example that has touched us since is a Lady who was married vand her Husband died a few years ago leaving her with 3 children. This whole family of 4 lives in one room. In this same room they have a few chickens, I sheep and this same room is used as a kitchen at night! Back at the office during our regular prayer meetings, the Lord spoke to us to start a scheme for these widows that would generate money for them. We felt that GIDCCO - Uganda (this program) could give these ladies some training in making art arid crafts which they can sell and generate money to take the orphans to school, but also care for their household needs since gidcco -Uganda at the moment can't afford it. One of the Social workers working with us went into the community visiting different families and several widows were very happy that we could think about them! GIDCCO - Uganda has since provided the startup funds to help these widows get started aid also found a trainer to teach these ladies different kinds of art and crafts like Mats,- place mats, bark cloth table mats, table cloths... When we get a good supply, we want to help them market these items so they can begin making an income . Please pray for this scheme - first that we will get market for the products they make, and also that it will bring enough money for them. Please let us know if you would like us to send you pictures. HIV/AIDS MOBILE CLINIC Background. While caring for the children, it became necessary for us to develop a program that cares for HIV/AIDS patients. A few of the children have lost one parent to AIDS, and that leaves the other parent with the disease too. When they finally get weak and are about to die, a child in such a home becomes the husband, the father, and the mother. This child has to care for the dying parent in addition to going to school and caring for her/his younger sisters and brothers. In a situation like this, there is usually no money at all, so the dying patient can't even afford the simplest medical treatment, like skin ointment or drugs for cough. These conditions normally attack these patients and weaken them further, leaving them with a very short time to live. While visiting in these homes, we felt deeply in our hearts the need to start a MOBILE CLINIC. With almost no funds, we started by counseling these patients. We used public transport, and each of our volunteers had to pay their own fare to the project area, as GIDCCO - Uganda doesn't have a car yet. Later, we (staff members) began collecting money amongst ourselves as a step of faith to buy simple drugs to give to these patients. Thank God one of our staff members was an enrolled, qualified nurse. We are involved in teaching the communities about HIV/ADS (sensitizion programs) what it is , how it is spread, and how people can protect themselves from getting infected and to educate people on poverty allevation. Evangelism we are preaching the good news to evey one, home to home. we are using Tv and VCR and vidio tapes about HIV/AIDS, NUTRITION and sexualy transmited diseases. All we rent and we trast God to provide our own equipment, The work of '=GIDCCO- Uganda' with HIV/AIDS GIDCCO- Uganda is majorly involved in HIV/AIDS sensitization programs, Counseling and medical treatment through a Mobile Clinic. We do not have a facility as yet for inpatient care With a committed team of trained staff. Please help us demostrate the love of God to this generations of forgotten orphans and widows. When you help us,we are able to show them that there is a God who love and cares about them. If you feel led to work with us in this noble cause, please don't hestate to contact us at once using the addresses above You can vist us to our website www.freetocharities.org.uk/gidcco.
