I have a Sunday school class of 2nd and 3rd graders and we are studying Moses right now so my questions are based on Moses. We are currently on the burning bush scene. Question #1: Is Mt. Horeb the same mountain where the 10 commandments were received? If they are the same location (burning bush and 10 commandments) then the statement in Exodus 3:12 is not quite right “…you (plural) will worship God on this mountain…” but when Moses was receiving the Law the rest of Israel was worshipping a golden calf idol. Question #2: When God tells Moses what to say to Pharoah he tells him to ask in a way that seems deceptive to me. Exodus 3:18 “Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a 3-day journey into the desertto offer sacrifices to the Lord our God’ What is with this 3-day journey thing? God wanted to deliver Israel from Egypt’s oppression and Israel was to take booty along with them when they left (Exodus 3:21-22) It sounds deceptive to me, like my child asking for permission to use the computer to check e-mail and then afterward going to You-Tube which is not permitted without parental participation. Asking permission for one thing and doing it but then continuing on in doing another thing. The child was deceptive in that intentions were not pure. Isn’t God asking Moses to do the same thing in hiding true intentions in the request for 3-days? My only thought is: God was actually protecting the king of Egypt from His wrath by letting the king deny this small request and not be held responsible (yet) for denying Israel’s release from captivity. Am I barking up the right tree here? Well, that is my thought for today. Respond if you wish or go on to more important things in your day.
