I don't know as much about the Hopi culture as I do about the Navajo but I did know a few Hopi people when I lived there in Arizona. The most interesting Hopi food that I hope you get to taste is a cerimonial flat bread made of blue corn and actually ashes from a fire. I was skeptical eating it but it is something I remember about their Hopi culture and it was actually very good. Hopis live more in communities and on high ground than Navajos do so I'm sure your experience will be much different than mine (Navajos live very spread out and seperated from others and down on flat land). I know Navajos are very reluctant to share their culture with "biliganas" (white people) and I think, if I remember correctly that the Hopi people are a little bit more open, but like I said, I knew only a few Hopi while I spent an entire 6 months with the Navajos. I hope your experience is as enjoyable and rememorable as mine was. The southwest has a way of capturing your heart forever. I will warn you that even though the Hopi people live in small towns and communities, Second Mesa is vertually in the middle of nowhere. Once you get outside the Hope rez into the Navajo rez, you will see nothing for miles and miles and miles except for a hogan here and there (hogans are Navajo homes/shacks). Have a great time. Ben and I will be praying for you. We want to hear all about it when you get back!
